President Jill Elias opened the meeting at 6.30 pm.
Welcome to our speaker, Ken Everett and guests Paula Everett, our Rotary Exchange Student, Mathilda Hontoir, Michael Elias.
The meeting was opened by singing the National Anthem.
 
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
How many Australians are riding in the Giro d'Italia?
Answer: Nine. Correctly answered by our guest speaker, Ken Everett.
 
BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES:  Susan Watson announced this week’s celebrations:

Peter Marfleet 78 years old on 2 June 2024.

Joan Rogers 29 May 2024.
Margaret Jones 2 June 2024.
 
CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
  • A private four-hour first aid course will be held for our Club on Saturday 13 July, from 9 am to 1 pm at Osborne Park for Dalkeith members and their partners and families. The Board has agreed to pay $500 towards the course; depending on the numbers, the cost per participant will be worked out. Thirteen members and families have registered to attend already; there is a maximum of 20, but there are still some places. Please let Jill know at jandmelias@hotmail.com if you are interested, please invite partners and friends too, if they would like to participate. An email with the course details has been sent out to all members.
  • The Business Lunch will be held on Friday, 9 August, at the Royal Perth Golf Club in South Perth. This year’s speaker is Paul Holmes a Court. Please start spreading the word and organising your tables. An email promoting the event with a flyer was sent to all members. Please contact John Bolto if you have any questions.
  • A 2009 Semillon and a 2010 Cabernet Merlot have been sourced from down south and are of exceptional value at $140 for a dozen. To order, please email Russell Hawkins at russell@chippenham.com.au. THERE ARE ONLY A FEW DOZEN OF EACH REMAINING. The wines already ordered are now available to be picked up. Please get in touch with Russell to arrange a time to pick them up at his office in Nedlands. Thanks to John Hopkins and Russell for sourcing the wines.
  • Craig James is collecting for the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. To donate, please contact Craig at Craig.James50@outlook.com, and he will send you the QR Code to donate directly. Craig collected $520 at the meeting tonight. Well done.
  • John Bolto announced that the next Tremission dates to be held at Champion Lakes will be on the weekend of Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21. Further details will be forthcoming.
 
ROTARY MOMENTS:
President Jill announced that the Club had earned a Club Citation for passing all its goals in the year.
 
SERGEANT SESSION:
  • All the Eagles supporters, just because why would you tip the team on an away game?
  • Kevin Jackson for winning a bottle of gin on the Kakadu trip;
  • Tony Chien for being fast asleep at the airport whilst waiting for the return trip to Perth from Kakadu;
  • Win Jones for losing a fight with a tree;
  • Craig James for being early and Hugh Stowell for taking his place of when the gong should be sounded;
  • Susan Watson for her letter published in The Australian;
  • Peter Panek for not buying all the ‘raffle tickets’ that Craig was selling;
  • Michael Bisset for a departure tax;
  • Steve Halbert for going to an event at the Claremont Showgrounds one whole day early;
  • John Bolto for winning a raffle prize of a photography book;
  • Bob Davis for giving the Sergeant a hard time for not wearing the Sergeant’s sash;
  • John MacKinnon for being an organiser of the Business Lunch but being away for it;
  • Geoff Cahif for his high performance at bowls and being famous for his success;
  • Jill Elias for not being published recently in any paper;
  • Nan Walker for enjoying the Ghan for four days then blowing her money on South Australian wines;
  • Graeme Sansom for being cheeky to the Registrars tonight;
  • Ken Ilett for dodging quokkas on Rottnest Island on his bike last week.

  • Ken spoke about The Internet of Things. Many everyday things are connected to the cloud or the Internet, such as one-time parcel trackers, vehicle telematics, gas, water, and electricity meters, mobile POS, sports wearables, meat thermometers, speakers, air purifiers, and many more devices.
  • Ken created Digital Matter in 2000 and is its CEO. He takes intellectual property ideas and turns them into products. His desk motto is ‘So many ideas, so little time.’
  • His company recently shipped its millionth device. The company has 84 staff in four locations.
  • Ken spoke about Gordon Moore, the co-founder of Intel, who, in 1965 observed that the number of transistors on a microchip doubled every two years. The size of microchips is also halving.
