The correct answer of niobium (Nb) was given by Mark Khangure AM.

No news was brought forward.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES: Susan Watson shared with everyone the following birthdays and anniversaries:
Birthday
Kim Bolto’s partner’s birthday on 2 May 2025.
Anniversaries
Neil and June Wilkie 53 years on 28 April 2025.
Kevin and Janice Jackson 54 years on 29 April 2025.
Richard Gorham and Catherine Cowan 49 years on 1 May 2025.

President Hugh then shared with everyone that it was also Susan Watson’s birthday on the following day, 6 May 2025.

CLUB AND COMMITTEES:
  • Ann Bray left pamphlets reminding everyone of the Metso concert “EPIC” conducted by Bruce Herriman on Sunday 29 June 2025 at the Taryn Fiebig Concert Hall.
  • John Bolto announced the footy tipping results, which still has Craig James in the lead.
  • Richard Gorham asked for volunteers to help with the set-up of the Science and Engineering Challenge and then for the event itself on the Thursday and Friday. Members can contact himself or Jonas Ednar.
  • President Hugh reported that Anita Bourke had attended the Mother’s Day Celebration High Tea for CINI Australia on the previous day, and it was pleasing to learn RCD was acknowledged us in their list of generous donors. Anita made 200 chocolate brownies for the event and donated 2 bottles of wine and two handmade children’s quilts, which were sold in the silent auction. Anita also reported that in the previous week she delivered children’s quilts to the Childrens Hospital and a large drop of donations and quilts to Grandcarers raising Grandchildren.
  • President Hugh reminded board members there will be a Board Meeting next Monday, 12 May 2025 hosted by Jonas Ednar.
SERGEANT SESSION: Sergeant Jason conducted a fine session and the following fines were recorded:
  • The Wine Table, a magnet for fine wine and even finer fines.
  • Departure & Arrival Tax, which captured four members.
  • Craig James was fined twice for being top of the footy tipping ladder and looking scruffy, cutting back on razors now that he’s retired.
  • Richard Gorham for ignoring Jonas on the street when he tried to say hello.
  • John Lindquist for allegedly jumping the queue at the polling booth on Saturday.
  • Nigel Johnson for greeting the Sergeant on polling day and assuring him his vote would count, but apparently didn’t.
  • President Hugh for being in the posh Premiership Lounge at the West Coast Eagles game on the weekend.

GUEST SPEAKER: Darren Reynolds on “Every Daughter Matters”. The guest speaker was introduced by Paul Kestell

Darren Reynolds gave a confronting address on the rescue of girls and young women from human trafficking, particularly between the Nepalese and Indian borders. “Every Daughter matters” has worked in conjunction with “Destiny Rescue”, who have rescued 27,00 children. Darren himself has undertaken undercover work.

“Every Daughter Matters” now has 13 border crossing stations along the southern border of Nepal and has achieved 3,676 interceptions to prevent girl being taken across the border to be used in brothels, as labour, street begging and worst of all organ harvesting. A girl can be bought in a brothel for less than the cost of a bottle of beer.

Every rescue costs around $180 and Darren hopes Rotary can assist with their cause.
