Tim Humphry announced his eldest daughter Liz Humphry who is Special Counsel with Clayton Utz, and soon to be a partner, is a nominee for the “Female Lawyer of the Year”.

Win Jones announced that former club member Brian Stanley died peacefully on 28^th September this year.

COMMITTEE REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Charitable Trust: (Russell Hawkins/Tim Humphry): The AGM of the trust will be held on the 19^th November and a good roll-up is required in order to change the constitution to comply with the new legislation.

Russell has good supplies of white wine and two cases of red wine remaining.

Club Secretary’s Report (Craig James): No Report. Our good secretary is busy with family from Honkers.

Club Treasurer’s Report (Anthony McGrath): No Report

Club Service: (John Bolto / John Murdoch):

John has sent out e-mails to members with tables booked for the Business Lunch to confirm numbers and guest names this week. He also sent out an email giving instructions on how to pay.

He will send parking details for the event through later this week. The same e-mail will seek special DIET requirements for guests and it is important to get these in by EARLY next week.

John also noted there is room for 10 MORE GUESTS at the business lunch and the club is keen to fill the places for a good cause.

Richard Ranshaw advised members that he is still seeking orders for fruitcakes. He has already received the cakes and will fill orders in the car park after the meeting.

Community Service: (Nigel Johnson/Steve Halbert): No Report

Vocational Service: (Peter Marfleet/Tom Kendall):

Peter advised a committee meeting would be held on Monday 15^th October. He is also sending around a “board” for those who expressed interest in the Duyfken to confirm and pay a deposit.

Foundation and International Service: (Peter Webb/David Smith): Peter praised the work done by Anita Bourke and handed the floor to her. Anita advised a pre-screening at the Windsor on Sunday the 28th October at 6.30 pm and she is sending a board around tonight. Membership: (Peter Panek/Lindsay Dry): Peter advised he is holding a committee meeting at his house tonight.

Peter reminded members of the North Perth joint meeting Calcutta on the 5^th November.

Peter is seeking 20 volunteers for SUPER SUNDAY 11^th November to count dogs, cats, bikes and all manner of things. This will be a significant fundraiser if the volunteers come forward.

Youth: (Kim Smith/Leon Lorenzen): Kim advised members that Cadu was travelling to Kalbarri last week.

Another sponsorship for the Science and Engineering Challenge next year has been obtained, but many more are required and members were reminded what a great cause it is.

Kim advised members the club is still seeking applications for Camp Opportunity until 28^th October.

Camp Opportunity is a live in week-longcamp for special-needs adult “Campers”, between the ages of 18 and 35 years, to team with an able-bodied carer “Buddy” for a week of adventure as they mix and interact in a fun atmosphere to share new friendships and experiences.

Ray House said that Kevin had sent out invites to those who expressed interest in the Voiceworks Plus cocktail party. Voiceworks PLUS is running a Cocktail Party in combination with Arup and is seeking people to attend.

PRESIDENTS REPORT:

President David reminded us to all discuss Rotary with our friends and invite them to attend a meeting at our Club.

The ClubRunner website is a mine of information: today Tom Langley emailed the October club activity report to all members and President David encouraged members to explore the website. Please give feedback to Tom Langley who is keen to improve the site to be the best it can be.

President David noted that a number of the longer serving members of the club have offered to do their life story including:

This will be called upon in the event of late speaker cancellations. Many of us more recent members are not fully aware of the distinguished company we have the privilege of keeping and these presentations will provide an opportunity to better know longer-serving members.

SERGEANT: Sergeant Trevor Gorey with Corporal Bruce Fiegert

Fines were levied on previously missed birthday celebrants, on Chris Cole and Kim Smith for 10 year and 2 year service respectively, Russell Hawkins for Grand Final attendance, Peter Robertson for TV appearance and for being amused by the “joyful strains” of the national anthem, David Smith and Chris Cole for arrival from distant and exotic shores, Richard Gorham for the Cape to Cape walk, Sir Winston for proffering a fine to the Sergeant, then forgetting what it was (lesson – give the Sergeant NOTHING – like the hamster he eats his young!), and John Lindquist for putting his dinner plate on early.

GUEST SPEAKER:

President David invited David Miller to introduce our guest speaker Jon Steward. David briefly introduced Jon as a Manchester United fan (Allez les Diables Rouges!) and even more significantly a single figure golfer.

Jonathon Steward was born at Selby in Yorkshire in 1963 and his family migrated to Australia in 1970. In 1971, Jon commenced at Embleton Primary School and encountered racism directed at his English “difference”. His father was an accomplished featherweight boxer in the Army and Jon tried boxing, but after two bouts decided boxing was not for him. He took up football (round ball) and played for the Bassendean Caledonians and at age 10 was selected to play for his WA age group team.

He became more interested in golf and other sports from about the age of 12 until he turned 16 and then turned to football again playing semi-professional for the Morley Windmills club and finished his career at Cracovia club in Beechboro. A career highlight was to be a member of a combined Perth team (the Perth Entertainers) to play Thailand in 2010

Jon started work in a Morley hardware store before moving to Karratha to work for Bunnings. He became expert in door hardware and eventually joined a locksmith to become a locksmith. After that, he moved into construction management and then into sales and business development. Most recently he is working in the insurance industry where he is married to his general manager and seeks refuge at Rotary meetings.

He was married in 1989 and has two daughters, Olivier and Emily. He met Tracy in 2013 and has a step-daughter Jacinta.

Jon is very grateful to the Rotary Club of Dalkeith, which has a generous culture of inclusion which has made him feel warmly welcome and he feels honoured to be one of us.
