QUACKAFALAYA Duck Race Covington Louisiana USAYou may recall in February this year Rotarian Irene Mosley headed to New Orleans on a Friendship Exchange. While she was there she got roped in stuffing envelopes to help organise the club's annual duck race. Being a good Rotarian she bought some tickets and encouraged others on the trip to do the same so that the event became an international race. On leaving Covington Irene told her host DG Elizabeth Van Sant that if she won she would return to collect the prize money.
Last Sunday Irene received this email, which at first glance could have seemed like a scam: I am emailing to tell you that a few minutes ago one of YOUR RUBBER DUCKS in our rescheduled Quack-A-Falaya (from April) crossed the finish line FIRST! That means you have won our Grand Prize of $1500!
Verification that it is true in the form of the live video of the race on facebook and it seems to be true! Irene had kept her tickets and on a recent visit to Kapiti Rotary Club had discussed with others from the New Orleans Trust that the race probably would not happen at all this year. How wrong could she be? Anyone that knows Irene well, knows that for her to not be able to travel to pick up her prize will be more upsetting than not receiving the prize at all.
With very little current in the river at the time of the race, this video showing the 12 minutes that the race lasted, could be likened to watching paint dry!
