SILVERSTREAM TRAILMosgiel Rotary is a principal of supporters of the “Silverstream beautification project partnership,” and recently over 1000 trees have been planted along the new track from Ag-Research towards the airfield. 300 of them from us.
Now the Department of Corrections have given approval to support this project by helping to grow many thousands more trees. Various grants have been applied for by us (Mosgiel Rotary) to support the costs involved. It was agreed that our club would handle the finances for this project group. Taieri College are also keen to be involved as are Downers who will help with the weed clearing. Approvals from interested parties such as the landowners and Kiwi Rail is also being sought.

To get things moving, this week a lorry load of potting mix is being sent to the prison and also seeds are being ordered to get the growing underway. In the meantime thousands of plants will need to be purchased with the (hopeful) community grants. “Adopt-a-Tree” and a “Pet Memorial Walk” as well as seating are all under discussion.
It is envisaged that this project will form part of the wider Otago cycle trail.
