Message from Nick Wood 9980 DGEPumpkins for Polio, is what I hope will be a fun way for our members to raise funds and awareness of our continued fight to eradicate Polio.
Attached you will find posters and information sheets to help sell this to your clubs, you are welcome to have others (non members) take part if it might help get them involved in Rotary and supporting this cause, provided they can raise the funds to support their pumpkin.
I will keep track of which clubs and how many growers each club has, so please advise me of each clubs need in the coming months, you will receive your pumpkin seedlings around labour weekend this year and then have until Anzac weekend to nurture the biggest pumpkin possible and have a heap of fun in the process.
(District will cover the cost of 1 seedling per 10 members of a club)
Do your research on how to grow this best possible pumpkin now and get the plot ready well in advance, we will be using the Atlantic Giant or similar Giant variety of pumpkin.
please consider where you grow your pumpkin as these can grow to weigh many hundreds of Kilos...
The weight in will be at Cromwell Conference 2022, we have arranged for cranes to be on hand to unload them and weight them.
you will have the pledges of sponsorship on hand, so we will be able to quickly work out our winners.
Prizes will be....
The Heaviest Pumpkin
The Wealthiest Pumpkin
The Wealthiest Area (Assistant Governor Prize)
The Ugliest Pumpkin.
It appears if we want to enter the competition we will need four top gardeners who are prepared to take on the challenge. Please let Stuart know if you're prepared to have a go and take it to conference at Cromwell next year. Message from our PE. Stuart.
It has been suggested we could get some seeds and have a club contest, but I would suggest we get seed of a edible pumpkin variety so we can enjoy pumpkin soup.
Balclutha club held a contest years ago and it was won by Don Waugh with an inedible pumpkin the size of the TV one ball second prize was the size of a basketball. We celebrated the judging with a soup meal with a selection of delicious homemade soups and a BBQ. Great night!
