As the Director of this committee of the Rotary Club of Mosgiel I’m pleased to present this report of the activities of this
committee for this Rotary year 2023-2024.
Comment: I have to report that essentially there is nothing really to report on. In fact I’d say I’ve been a bit of a loss as a
Director for the Club this last year and I offer my sincere apologies to the club for my non-performance in the most
important facet of this committee—Membership..
Bearing this in mind I have asked in-coming President Merv that I not be considered as a Director for the upcoming year
and I will be happy to continue as Rotary Club member sitting on the back benches.
I was away in Australia for the start of the year when Stuart kindly held the fort for me. We’ve tried to hold some meetings
and I have corresponded with the committee a few times but with not much to show. My apologies.
Membership:
Namely, I’m not aware of there being any new members in the Rotary year 2023-24. On the other side of the ledger it’s
even worse. We have lost at least a couple of members -IPP John van Deft (to Blenheim) and Micheal Lawlor who has
resigned from the club principally due to ageism and the associated problems. Also I’m really sorry that Bob B. is unable to
be with us regularly. John Wallace has sadly died after a wonderful contribution to the club over many years-- over 50
years as a member (beat that if you can!!) and latterly as a Life Member.
Welfare:
This has been handled by Rob and Lea without any input from this Director. Thank you to those two. And our thanks to Lea
and Irene for organising our coffee mornings.
Fellowship:
I believe we have had a very good year on this front. Just to remind members we have had, I believe, a steady program
throughout the year. Speakers and activities have included: Stu Blackwood (F and P), Our own Colin M—(in reply to Jock
Allison), Nadine Goatley from Corrections NZ, Brian Peat, Clinton Chambers on happenings at Burns Lodge, an evening of
‘Meet the Candidates’ (for the Taieri Electorate General Election), Mark McNelly—heavy haulage, The Taieri College speech
night, also a talk by 2 Taieri College students on their cricket trip to India, Roger Leslie on his walk of the length of NZ
during the Covid years, David Hunt on life in Saudi Arabia, Juanita Willems on Foster Hope, Stephanie Hughes on Batten
Disease, Anna Campbell, Antionette Mclean from the Otago Alzheimer’s group, and next week June 24 we have Andrew
Simms for an update on items from the local political arena. Also we’ve had several meetings in conjunction with the Taieri
Club, and visits to the Gas Museum, the Bowling Club, Bowl Line, the Village Green, McLay Boats. And other social events
and outings which I hope altogether have contributed to a year of good and interesting fellowship.
My sincere thanks to members who have helped with suggestions.
The Friends of Rotary group has been made aware of our events and some have been to our meetings and helped with our
projects.
