DG Dave's "Weekend of Connection" 9.00 am at Rotary Park to plant trees and spread Mulch a BBQ will be operating and an evening meal is planned at the Nan King for those that Registered.
The weather forecast doesn't look to good but if there is any change I will let you know.
 
Thurs 5th June we will be sorting the Salmon and Venison so a few volunteers there would be great from 12noon at the Wingatui Race Course.
 
St Johns Appeal
We have been asked again if we could man the stand at New World on Friday 13th June from 9am -4pm I envisage two volunteers for a three two hour shift and then a one hour so 6-7 of us would handle it. Additional information and call for volunteers will be held at the AGM on Monday 9th June.

Mosgiel Bus Shelter Restoration
John Seddon is leading the team who are working on the repairs and maintenance of the bus shelter and making it vandal proof. The Rotary symbol will be powdered coated and put on the back wall of the shelter. Final designs are still to be approved. The clock is still being fixed and we will cleaned once this is completed. 
Prof Lee - Foulden Maar
Emeritus Professor Daphne Lee, from the Geology Department at the University, was our guest speaker last Rotary Meeting.  What an interesting and enlightening talk. 
 
She spoke about the recent fossil discoveries at the Foulden Marr near Middlemarch, giving an outline of the recent history of the 23 million of years old deposit of ancient creepy crawlies that dwelt in that primordial swamp!  
 

Foulden Maar is a fossil site near Middlemarch. The fossils were deposited in the small deep crater Lake of a maar formed around 23 million years ago by a volcano in the Miocene era. The crater lake existed for a period of around 130,000 years, and during this time it gradually filled up with diatomite, composed of annual layers of silica-shelled algae (diatoms).

These layers of diatomite have preserved exceptional fossils of fish from the crater lake, and plants, spiders and insects from the sub-tropical forest that developed around the crater. The site is the only known maar of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and is one of New Zealand's pre-eminent fossil sites. A 2018 proposal to mine Foulden Maar for livestock-food additive attracted significant public opposition. The mining company went into receivership in 2019, and in 2023, the Dunedin City Council reached an agreement with the receivers to purchase the land, including the surrender of the mining permits.

District 3040 DG has invited Rotarians in District 9999 to visit their country in Jan/Feb 2026.
We would then host a return visit from India later in 2026.
