Brighton Surf Life Saving Club
We had the privilege of hearing from three young Surf Life Savers from Brighton Surf Cub, Jess, McKenzie and Jamie, along with the Clubs Vice President Danny, about their experiences at the recent Piha Life Guard Training Camp.
Piha is a rugged, scenic and remote black-sand beach located on Auckland's West Coast, known for powerful surf and native forest walks, while Brighton Beach in Dunedin is a more sheltered, popular family beach on the city's East Coast, featuring golden sand and calmer waters suitable for swimming and picnicking, as well as nearby coastal walks and wildlife viewing opportunities. Two very contrasting and different beaches requiring different surf life saving requirements and techniques.  Piha focuses on dealing with strong rips and the forces the ocean, emphasising survival and calm behaviour, comparatively, Brighton's focus is more on navigating the daily wave action and using techniques to maintain control and awareness in the water. The club focuses on preventative measurers especially in training young beach goers.  The training camp certainly made a positive impression on these young people.
These Young Surf Life savers were supported by the Clubs Trust to attend the Piha Life Guard Training Camp.
