Captain's Log

It was great to see a good turnout of members at the first night at our new
home the Taieri bowling club. Members were overheard talking about the
warmth of the venue and evidence was the number of jackets hanging on the
backs of chairs. The food was tasty and plentiful, and it will probably be our
waistlines that we will be complaining about next. Lea may end up having to
bring her scales along before to long.
Lea and Dave were sharing about their trip on the Ghan from Adelaide up to
Darwin followed by a few days in Sydney it must have been a great trip. The
talk certainly hit the spot. Seargent Stu was if fine fettle (no pun intended) and
even those who missed being fined were happy to contribute. Possibly a starter
fine for next week should be who has googled Australian train journeys or
camper van prices from Adelaide to Darwin this week.
Colin has had planting again this week and Mike announced the The Otago
youth adventure trust are having a working bee at Berwick on the weekend of
the 12'/13t of October. It would be great to have some helpers support this.
Also a reminder that we are only a few weeks away from our Booksale at
Wingatui. Work will increase a bit over the coming weeks so be prepared to
help if Ross Fraser or Dave gives you a call. Looking forward to see you all back
at the Bowling Club on the g' of September.

From the Editor.....

 

As I sit in the shade of a rather large umbrella to avoid the heat of the day, 29 degrees, I reflect on the speaker's comments at the recent Burleigh Heads Rotary Club meeting.  The speaker spoke about the effect current roading construction from the installation of light rail in the area, and the cost of living crisis is having on small local businesses, particularly the hospitality industry. The cost of living crisis is having an impact for everyone, making ends meet is becoming increasingly difficult, but, to be honest, I am having difficulty in relating it to it here on the Gold Coast.  In my recent grocery shop I paid, $2.50 for 500g of strawberries, $3.50 for 300g of blue berries, 3L milk $3.10, whole cauliflower $2.50 and petrol is currently available at $1.62 per litre. But it is all relative to what you are used to.   The most powerful comment a fellow Burleigh Rotarian made was how to help local business, "join up with other Rotarians, take a walk to your local coffee shop, choose a different one daily/weekly and support the local cafe industry, it is something every Rotarian can do.  What we get out of it is fellowship and a great coffee."  Something else our club is doing every second Monday so well.

Wishing Jill all the best after he recent hip replacement surgery. We have told Jill is recovering well and she is looking forward to getting back on the golf course in the near future.

 

All members, friends and families are welcome to join the coffee mornings, held on the alternative Monday mornings at 10.30am, to our club meetings at various cafes around Mosgiel area. Keep an eye out on the Sunday for a text message reminding members of the coffee morning.
