Bowls Evening

The sun lingered lazily over Mosgiel, casting long golden streaks across the immaculate greens of the local bowling club. It was one of those rare Otago evenings where the air felt soft, the sky impossibly clear, and summer seemed determined to make a good impression. For members of the Mosgiel Rotary Club, it was the perfect setting for their first social gathering of 2026.

Laughter drifted across the green as bowls rolled with varying degrees of precision. Some players displayed surprising skill, delivering smooth, confident shots that curved gracefully toward the jack. Others approached the game with more enthusiasm than accuracy, sending bowls wandering cheerfully off course — much to the delight of onlookers.

It didn’t seem to matter who won or lost. What mattered was the easy camaraderie, the shared jokes, and the simple pleasure of being outdoors together. Newer members found themselves warmly welcomed into teams, while seasoned Rotarians offered helpful advice — sometimes solicited, sometimes not.

Although the evening was marked by great fun and friendly rivalry, there was a noticeable absence. The team from the Dunedin Rotary Club had unfortunately been unable to attend, and their presence was missed. A few good-natured comments suggested they were perhaps secretly relieved to avoid the mounting competition.

As the sun dipped below the horizon and the sky shifted to soft shades of pink and violet, members gathered for refreshments, cheeks flushed from play and spirits high. It had been a fantastic way to start 2026 — not with formalities or agendas, but with laughter, connection, and a reminder of the friendships at the heart of Rotary.

If the evening was any indication, the year ahead for the Mosgiel Rotary Club promised to be one of energy, fellowship, and plenty more moments worth celebrating.

Poppy Collection

The Mosgiel Rotary Club is seeking volunteers to assist with the Poppy Collection at Dunedin Airport from April 18–24. Shifts run between 1.00pm and 5.00pm, with convenient two-hour time slots available. This is a wonderful opportunity to support a meaningful cause and represent our club in the community.
If you’re able to help, please contact Merv — your time will make a real difference.
