Membership is the most urgent challenge of our time.
You reap what you sow
The style of Rotary was no longer serving the needs of the community. Change was needed.
No longer seen as relevant - clubs smaller
- members older
- less of us working
- the capacity to network has decreased
No longer seen as attractive - to those who had traditionally
Volunteering landscape has changed - we have not changed our practices
We have become obsessed with processes - not focussed sufficiently on outcomes
Why is change so hard to implement - we have become comfortable
People over 50 seeking different things than people under 50.
Membership is everyone's job.
Think about the people we are trying to attract
University students not a lot of spare time
Young people " "
Small business owner " "
Young family people " "
Executives " "
Retirees Have more spare time to put into Rotary
Are our meetings interesting, welcoming and punctual?
The questions we need to ask ourselves.
Are our meetings a productive and effective use of our time?
What is going on at our meetings? What do we want from our meetings?
Entertainment, Camaraderie under 50 productivity
Too much time spent at meetings with the same old parting thought, National Anthem
To attract younger members by encouraging volunteering. Service needs to be at the middle of our universe the most important aspect.

1 High value on ‘hands on’ projects. We are visible, visible, visible
2 No bells and whistles meetings. Meet once a month. Get together on a Sunday morning or afternoon. No meal, no sergeant, no money box
3 Cheap meals from time to time or share a plate
4 Banners promoting Rotary, also folders filled with information re community projects undertaken or planned for
5 Develop relationships with local businesses
