Outward Bound

In April 2025, the Trust was proud to support Johannah Horrell, a Year 13 student at Amana Christian School, to attend a three-week Outward Bound course in the stunning environment of Queen Charlotte Sound. Over 21 challenging and rewarding days, Johannah joined 11 other young people from around the country on a life-changing journey designed to push boundaries, build confidence and discover what really matters.

From the moment the course began, participants were encouraged to step well beyond their comfort zones. Each day presented new physical, mental and emotional challenges that required teamwork, persistence and self-belief. Through a carefully designed programme of outdoor adventures and group challenges, Johannah developed a stronger sense of independence, learned how to set achievable goals and experienced firsthand the power of working together as a team.

The course focused on far more than physical endurance. Every activity was built to develop real-world skills and attitudes that young people can carry into school, further study and life beyond the classroom. Participants learned to stay calm under pressure, work through uncertainty, take on leadership roles and reflect deeply on their own values and direction. These experiences helped build clarity, focus and resilience at a time in their lives when big decisions and change are beginning to take shape.

For Johannah, the Outward Bound experience provided an opportunity to grow in confidence and self-belief while gaining skills that will support her as she approaches the end of her school years and prepares for the next stage of her journey. The Trust is delighted to have supported her participation in this powerful programme and looks forward to seeing how the confidence, leadership and resilience she has gained will shape her future with purpose.
