Well Monday nights meeting went well not only did we get to welcome back our intrepid travellers Donald and Margie we also had the pleasure of Rod and Ann Ward as our guests. Margie gave a very good three-minute talk about their time on the Gold Coast and their time with the Rotary Club at Burleigh heads. We are hoping we can keep them happy, so they don’t emigrate across the ditch. Our new caterer once again fed us with an amazing meal which included a lovely dessert. Sergeant Stu was able to take a few dollars but started off with his own tale of woe and how he had tried to get a better pair of boots off a fellow Rotarian.  Our main speaker for the evening was Professor Bruce Robertson from the Otago University who works in the Zoology/ Marine Biology department. His area of expertise was how to reduce the number of Hooker sea lion deaths in the Southern Ocean around the squid fishing grounds in  the area of the Auckland Islands. It was an interesting talk and does make one realise that with a total population of only about 12000 they are all important for the survival of the species. Mike was able to thank the club members for their help down at Berwick camp. A fantastic turnout from our club and an awesome help for the Trust. Just a reminder that this coming Monday we have our Rotary speech competition with several guests attending from Taieri College. Thanks to all the members in there different roles at the club Adrian and Peter behind the bar were doing some good work. See you all on Monday night.

The old saying "Many hands make light work" rings true for Rotary Club members who helped to transform the Berwick Camp site wardens house over the weekend.

 

   

It was great to return to club, to catch up with everyone and share our learnings from Burleigh Rotary club. Although all rotary clubs operate very similar there are few things that each club does differently.  Burleigh 'fines' members for happy thoughts and moments, it is a great way to raise a few dollars and increase positivity amongst the club. (not saying members are negative), Using a two up board they played heads and tails - a lot of fun for members and guests.  Whenever they host a fundraising event they nominate a Charitable recipient, this makes it easier to raise those much needed dollars as clients can see where and why money is being raised.

 

Creating the our clubs regular Bulletin is both rewarding and challenging.  Challenging as I am constantly looking for material and stories to include in the bulletin and rewarding as I learn more and more about resources that available to members, through My Rotary, Club Runner, District Website, Rotary International website, RDU supplies website. The list is quite extensive, therefore, I thought I would set up a column for each bulletin to share a gem that I have found within one of these resources.
