There were 26 people present, including almost-member Peter Williams—always nice to see you, Peter—our speaker Micheal Wood, and a brief ‘guest’ appearance by member Catherine. It is a pity her bus runs so late, as she would love to be present for ALL of the meetings. Nevertheless, lovely to see you Catherine!
A very interesting talk from Micheal, a very polished presentation with the absolute minimum of notes. Born in Clyde, with a spell in Invercargill as a young man when working for Woolworths, Micheal has essentially been a Mosgiel person for most of his life, and obviously he has dedicated to his life selling real Estate, with his Faith behind his belief system. Founded his own firm, Taieri Real Estate (with another local Colin Walters) before merging wth Metro and then Bayleys. Micheal recently tried to retire, and filled some of his time doing a Home Handyman course at The Polytechnic College. But he soon ran out of projects around his home. So he is back selling real estate, but with a more balanced work/life balance having joined a friend to share their work load.
The redevelopment of the Mosgiel bus shelter is now nearing completion. Earlier, Rotary volunteers repainted the shelter in Rotary blue and installed the Rotary logo, giving it a fresh new look.
The aluminium side panels have now been completed and are ready for installation. Volunteers were called to help on Thursday with the final stage of the project and get the shelter ready for the community to enjoy.

Last Friday we completed the third planting day along the bank of the Silverstream. We are about halfway through the project having planted about 600 plants—red tussocks, silver tussocks and wind grasses. We’ve had perfect wet weather to help the plants get established compared to a few years ago when under John van Delft’s leadership, and the DCC insisted the plants be put in even when warned it was far too dry for the plants to successfully establish, --and guess what-------most perished.
The Silverstream beatification project has been chaired and hugely helped along by Brian Peat. Students from The Polytechnic, Amana School, Elmgrove School, East Taieri School, Taieri College and the Boys Brigade who have all helped with the actual planting. A DCC grant helped start the project and the plants are propagated at the ‘Corrections Facility’ at Milburn---let’s call it what it is---The Prison. Mosgiel Rotary handle’s the finance—thank you Dave and Lea, and these members have all helped dig the holes and do other work: Rod, Merv, Wayne, Kevin, Brian, Colin, Steve, Stuart, Neville, Graham, and Peter Williams, and Sue and Don Broad from Outram are willing volunteers as well. A great many man hours have been volunteered. Great Club Participation---THANK YOU everyone.
During Donald’s presidential year, we have changed our approach to fines for members’ misdemeanours, replacing them with “Happy Thoughts.” We encourage everyone to participate by sharing a positive thought, something good that has happened, or an uplifting message with the club. And if you can’t think of a positive thought, a good old “Dad” joke is always acceptable! Remember, though, to put a few dollars into the jar for the Club.
Once again this year, members will have the opportunity to support our Lily Bulb fundraising project. Bulbs will be available from August, with more information to follow.
At the last meeting the club trialled a new initiative to reduce food waste by offering members the opportunity to box up leftover food from the meal to take home. Once everyone had finished eating, boxed meals were made available, and members were invited to fill a container for $10 per box. The containers are a generous size, allowing a good amount of food to be packed in, making it well worth it for those who would enjoy the leftovers later. The system was self-service, giving members the freedom to choose what they would like, while also helping ensure that less food goes to waste.
Merv Clearwater has taken over the role of Attendance and the Duty Roster from Brian Shanks.
If you are unable to attend a meeting it is your responsibility to let me know well in advance of the day of the meeting if you are unable to attend. If you DONT we will be charged for the meal from Paul the caterer and you will be liable.
