Some Rotary Rules No 1

With the recent loss of five of our members through death and relocation we need to make a special effort to rebuild the club membership. Danna and her team are working hard to get new members but need all of us to work on it as well. All of us must know people who easily qualify for membership of Rotary. See article 10 below.

All you have to do is hand their names into Secretary Kevin and the Directors will take it from there

DO YOU KNOW THE RULES?

Article 10 Membership

— General Qualifications. This club shall be composed of adult persons who demonstrate good character, integrity, and leadership; possess good reputation within their business, profession, and/or community; and are willing to serve in their community and/or around the world.

Honorary Members.

With the appointment of Eric as an honorary member of our club it is important that we all understand the details of the roll and privieliges of being an Honorary member. (see Section 6)

Section 6 — Honorary Membership. (a) Eligibility for Honorary Membership. Persons who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals and those persons considered friends of Rotary for their support of Rotary’s cause may be elected to honorary membership in this club. The term of such membership shall be as determined by the board. Persons may hold honorary membership in more than one club.

(b) Rights and Privileges. Honorary members shall be exempt from the payment of dues, shall have no vote, and shall not be eligible to hold any office in this club. Such members shall not hold classifications, but shall be entitled to attend all meetings and enjoy all the other privileges of this club. No honorary member of this club is entitled to any rights and privileges in any other club, except for the right to visit other clubs without being the guest of a Rotarian.

2018-19: Be the Inspiration

RI President-elect Barry Rassin’s theme for 2018-19, Be the Inspiration, asks Rotarians to inspire change in the world and in each other. “I ask all of you to Be the Inspiration to help Rotary move from reaction to action — to take a hard look at the environmental issues that affect health and welfare around the world and do what we can to help.”

INTERPLAST

Interplast Australia & New Zealand has been part of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand since its inception in 1983. Since then the work of Interplast’s professional volunteers has resulted in over 25,000 life changing plastic and reconstructive surgeries being performed and the training of countless medical staff in developing countries across the Asia-Pacific region. Rotary continues to be vital in both governance and support.

Birth defects, burns injuries, trauma injuries and the like are all treated by Interplast’s volunteer teams.

The ‘twin track’ approach of delivering surgical services and providing training/mentoring programmes is reaching into the future of our neighbouring developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

As it is approaching that time of the Rotary year that Clubs may be looking to their final funding disbursements, we respectfully ask that you give consideration to supporting Interplast, one of Rotary’s most productive partnerships.

Interplast is a wonderful health and humanitarian programme and one most worthy of your Club’s support.

Please don’t hesitate to request a speaker or a short presentation to help your Club learn more about one of Rotary’s best partnerships.

Dictionaries to Schools

A morning well spent!

What a rewarding project Graham has organised and such a pleasure to drive to first Lee Stream School where we presented seven dictionaries to the very grateful students who were wondering if they would be getting theirs. Then on to Middlemarch and the StrathTaieri primary school.

First to be welcomed by the Principal Emma Barker who some years ago was a RYE student to Canada sponsored by the Mosgiel Rotary Club, and a Rotarian in the Waimate Club before moving to Middlemarch.

Then to be so welcome in the classroom of young girls and boys six of them in year four (standard two?) waiting to receive a dictionary of their very own.(see photo)

What a pleasure it is to experience how grateful the children and teachers are, and be assured that the books are valued and get plenty of use. We also have to thank Margie for so beautifully printing the children names in all the books.
