It was amazing  to find only one person at Rotary last night  who was aware of the big stone when I asked around. In fact I found it surprising to find long time residents of Mosgiel had never even heard of big stone road. Others had heard of the road but had never given it a thought as to how it got its name. So here is why it did. There is a big stone beside the road  and is on what was once part of Hope Hill farm. The structure of the stone is very interesting, it is more like a large block of concrete than a rock. It appears to be made of gravel set in a solid block and all the loose gravel was washed away from around it by the sea millions of years ago.

Directions to find that it does exist.
Go for a drive with the family some time soon and help to have a better informed community. Just drive to Brighton, then continue on the road to Taieri Mouth until you come to big stone road sign and head up that  road..   Continue onto the gravel for a short distance and the Big Stone will appear on the right side of the road. Make sure that anyone climbing it is very careful not to fall. Enjoy the wonderful costal view.
