Captains Log for 12th December - Club Night
Our final meeting of the year was not one full of the joys of the festive season. 25 of us heard of the news that past members Barry Wood and Graham Shirley had passed away this week, both were 87. Fraser Ellis and Austin Banks gave a eulogy to both of them. (Obituaries to follow). It was also announced that Peter Chin was admitted to hospital for an operation. Get well soon Peter, we hope your recovery goes well by Christmas.
More sad news, that Kevin Dale, one of our stalwart members had his last meeting at our club as he was moving to Invercargill in January to be near his family in retirement. There was a round of applause and best wishes from the members present. Kevin offered an open invitation to members visit and have beer with him.
John Seddon is handing over his “member apologies” duties to Brian Shanks from now. John has done this for about 10 years every week. You deserve a rest and all of us thank you for your work over the years.
Last week a number of us went to see “The Lost King”, a film in aid of polio eradication with around 51 area Rotary members attending, including members from the Taieri Rotary Club. Well worth seeing if you are in the city over Christmas.
Merv. Clearwater told us more Salmon is coming for collection on Wednesday after 12 noon, hams and venison ready for pick up too. We have managed to source some extra export quality salmon so give Merv. a ring if you would like more.
Irene reports “Run the Runway” is mostly on track for February 11, 2023, in support and with the collaboration of the Otago Adventure Youth Trust.

Year Reports
The planned 1/2 year AGM was abandoned as with no treasurer and no incoming President in attendance it made it difficult to make decisions. The president’s and treasurer’s reports had previously been circulated to all members. Neville Goodsir and Colin Mackintosh read their reports.
A discussion followed on the Treasurer’s recommendation of an increase in next year’s subscription. A $20 increase was suggested as Rotary Foundation club contribution per member as well as the Polio Plus club contribution amounted now amounted to $150 of the club subscription costs. There would also be further costs in the administration for our club.
It was decided that the breakdown of the members levy’s needs to be more fully understood and it was moved that the decision be left in the hands of the directors once all information is at hand.
