Plant a tree for every Rotarian
A.G. Claire Ramsay organised the Dunedin clubs to join together to answer the RI President’s call for all Rotarians to plant a tree this Rotary year.
They went to Sinclair Wetland on Saturday 2 September to plant trees.
Claire invited Mosgiel,Taieri, Milton and Balclutha clubs to join them and make it a meet your neighbour event. "If we end up with 100+ people (great family opportunity) we should be able to create some media cover for it and profile for Rotary".
The deal was that Glen at the wetlands will provide half the trees and we buy the balance – but actually he will buy them because of the native programme at the wetlands which means not just any tree can be planted. He gets them for between $1.15 to $8 each so it won’t be an onerous expense spread around the clubs.
Our club agreed to be involved, Eight members attended and the job was completed by 11.00 am. They were first to arrive and when other clubs arrived Mosgiel members had planted far more than their quota of trees. Another nine club members were busy on another project, it was a busy Saturday morning.
Our team was led by Nurseryman John van Delft who knows all about planting trees, with SEBA our Rotary Youth Exchange student from Chile assisting. (see photos)
The Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) Programme commenced in 1929 and is an official programme of Rotary International. The programme currently involves more than 8,000 students annually with Rotary Clubs in over 80 countries around the world. RYE is a 12 month overseas exchange programme for young people of secondary school age 15 to 19.
