Meet 9999 D G Jan Boustead.JAN'S STORY:- My initial introduction to Rotary was as a partner to a Rotarian in 1990. We loved hosting several Rotary Exchange students over several years while my 3 daughters were growing up and I enjoyed attending many lively district conferences.
In 1998 I joined the Rotary Club of Pahiatua in District 9940 and undertook many roles including bulletin editor, Club and Community Chair and President 2002-03. At this point I relocated to Christchurch and took a break from Rotary involvement. However, it was not long before I was invited to join the Rotary Club of Ferrymead in District 9970 where I undertook the role of President 2011-12 and attended the very first South Pacific Presidents Elect (SPPETS) weekend in Auckland. In 2015 I was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for my services to the club during the difficult earthquake years. In 2019 I transferred to the Rotary Club of Lincoln where in 2020 I was the director of the Membership, Fellowship and Vocational committee.
My husband David is a retired building contractor. He is a former Rotarian and providing strong support for me in the role as District Governor for the new District 9999. When I am not doing Rotary ‘stuff’ I am an avid reader, and we both enjoy spending time in the garden. David and I love catching up with our 6 adult children and 13 grandchildren who are spread over 5 locations around New Zealand and Australia.
We can claim Jan as a South Otago girl as during her high school years the family lived at the Telford Farm Institute were her father was Agricultural Manager arriving at Telford in 1967. For the next seventeen years, Gordon McClintock trained hundreds of teenage students in sound farming practice. Most of them became very successful farmers and community leaders. Jan's mother Marylyn, who still lives in Balclutha, was hostel matron for many years. With her lovely personality and motherly skills which she shared, she assisted the young students with their transition into becoming responsible adults and good citizens. After graduation these students were in high demand on farms all over New Zealand as employees. Many bought their own farms or took-over family farms, others joined or established farming support businesses.
Jan like some of our members is an ex-student of South Otago High School .She attended high school, Teacher's Training College, and flatted with Jenny Gardyne, (Irene's sister.) when they trained as teachers.
We look forward to welcoming Jan and David to our combined meeting with the Taieri Club at Burn's Lodge on Wednesday7th September. (No meeting Monday 5th)
