Presidents message

Hello Rotarians,

We had a very successful morning on Saturday collecting for the Child Cancer appeal, thank you John M, Colin, Peter M and Boyce. A total of $204 was collected. I’m told a good turnout at firewood working bee on Monday resulted in progress whittling the pile down, another two nights to finish?

Mayor Bryan Cadogan is our speaker next week. Bryan will update us on Milton matters and comment on the Governments Three Waters Review.

To avoid a clash with the upcoming Otago Anniversary day and Easter we have decided to meet two Mondays in a row (8th and 15th) before going back to our two weekly cycle. The 15th suits Lucy Coutts, we sponsored Lucy so she could attend Rotary Young-Person Leadership Awards  (RYLA) We look forward to meeting Lucy.

See you Monday.

Stories
Holiday Happenings

Jim Murdoch was having a clean out and threw away an epirb which was 15 years old and he thought was had it.  The next day he got a call from Wellington asking, “are you Ok out at Mount Cooee?”.
Colin Calteaux has a new knee - there’s no holding him back, now.
Peter Stewart has new grandson – his daughter Erin gave birth to Oliver over the summer break.
Peter Mallon has had a plan for a wooden wheelbarrow since 1971.  He finally built one for Mary-Rose for xmas – only to have a friend fall over it and break it when leaving their house!
John Taal spent some time fishing out off Bull Creek over the summer – he did manage to catch a 2.6kng Blue Cod.
Suzie, Brendon, Glenis and John, and Ross and Jennifer all enjoyed the Gibston Concert – great weather, great NZ music. (Sorry if I missed anyone off the list).
Firewood

Thanks to all those who helped out with firewood last Monday.

Orders for firewood to go to Robin Taylor – 0223724144, tails1robin@gmail.com

Tramp Reports
Milford 7 – 11 January – Rob Wilton reported that it was a great trip and great weather.  He has received very positive feedback from participants.

Catlins, Tautuku – Jackie, Mark and Suzie were leaders on this camp.  50 people attended – good weather and good feedback.

Mt Aspiring Lodge – Jenny Scott led this.  They had 380 one day then snow the next.  Great fun and a great bunch.

Jules Radich, a DCC councillor, spoke to the club about the new camera which is to be installed at Taieri Mouth to help monitor the changing bar and make it a safer place for boaties.  The web camera will take a photo every 15 minutes.  The public will have free access and be able to see a line feed and also the last 24 hours.

The web cam has 30x optical zoom.  This model is used by police around the country.  The cost is $15k and the camera will be owned and managed by Dunedin Marine Search and Rescue.  There will be a live action view available online.

Stage 1 ($20K) involves mounting the camera on a house in Taieri Mouth.  Stage 2 ($50K) will involve mounting the camera further up the hill on a pole on road reserve.  This will give a better view over the bar.  The camera runs on mains power and uses a satellite signal.

Taieri Mouth has been the number one site for rescues in the Otago area.  The Waitaki River Mouth also has a camera although not as powerful a model.  Bull Creek also has a camera.

A website is being set up and it will be advertised at the boat ramp.  Live view, history and weather forecast info will be available through the website.
A Give-a-Little campaign has been set up to help create the funding for this project - https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/taieri-mouth-bar-camera-project

It is great to see the community working together to make our region a safer place.
Thanks to Jules for presenting to the club - we wish him all the best in this endeavour.

District 9980 Conference

Rotary Conference 19 /21 March:

Message from the Rotary Club of Waimate:

Our team are very excited about the event we are putting together for you all, and have tried to make it as affordable as possible by keeping the registration cost to $150pp and we also have some home hosted opportunities :)

We are hoping people will register early to help assist with planning. Families welcome :)

https://www.rotary9980conference.org

We hope to do visits or zoom sessions with clubs in the new year to further promote the conference - but I'm sure you've all had a good heads up from DG Dylan.

MILTON ROTARY members - Jackie and Glenis are organising a group to go to the conference.  Let either of us know if you are keen to come along and join in – the conferences are always great fun!  Waimate 19 – 21 March 2021

Child Cancer Appeal
Saturday 27 February, Milton Rotary are running a fundraising stand outside Supervalue.
Please let us know if you are available for an hour or two.
McNally's Track
McNally’s Track – there are two trees down after the winds over the summer break and an area near the top which needs clearing.  A working Bee is planned for Monday 15 February for those who can help out.  More information at Rotary next week.
Stephen reported that a journalist from the ODT had contacted him about McNally’s Track and is writing an article.  She walked the trach over the summer.

Blessed Box
Saturday 30 January saw a group of local people get together at the Tokomairiro High School Foods Room for the first 'cook' for the Blessed Box project.
The project is now under way and some very happy new mum's received their Blessed Box late in the day.

Well done to Olivia Mathieson and her team for the amazing job they has done in getting this project under way.
