President's Message 6 May 2024

President's message

Hello Milton Rotarians , Wyatt Mallon  gave us a good talk last week sharing his experience at Rotary Science Forum in Auckland.
Next week Kim Schiller is talking  about opportunities & possible developments in & around Milton.

McNally's track
I have heard mixed reports about  the condition of the track ,  we haven't paid it much attention of late. Are we still keen to maintain it ?
Is someone keen to organise some working bees. It would be good if someone had time to walk it and give us a report of what needs done.

Cheers
Robin

Trip reports
Final Trip reports for the season:
Stewart Island:
Both Suzi and Stephen had walkers having to return to base with various health issues. They started with a group of 18 but finished with 12! Fortunately Water Taxis are available!
Aspiring :
Steve McLay passed on Rob Wiltons report. The trip went really well apart from one medical event that required a heli - vac.
South Coast:
Robbie had an enjoyable and successful trip. He described how one women was able to walk to the bottom of the Port Craig viaduct to view it from beneath. Last season she had been air-lifted off it with a broken leg.
Hump Ridge:
A small group of 12 had a successful trip over the hump ridge. Heavy rain each night made for plenty of mud wherever there was no boardwalk.
2 - Minute Talk
Ross Pringle spoke about the War Memorial on the Bull Creek / Milton road beside the turn off to Akatore. John Taal, Ross and one other have tidied up the memorial surounds. Ross spoke about one of the men listed on the memorial - a Frank Russell. Frank was the only son of the Russell family who farmed at Glenledi. Sadly Frank died of scarlet fever before he reached the front.
Wyatt Mallon
Wyatt Mallon, grandson of long term member Peter, spoke to us about the two weeks he spent at the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum. Wyatt stayed on the Auckland University campus with 168 other students. They attended lectures based around science and technology and visited organisations using  techology in their businesses. After introductions to the forum they were divided into teams with whom they would work with for their time there. Each team had to develop a " dragons den " poject that they had to pitch to investors. Their team decided to develop technology that could replace shark nets. They developed this over the two weeks and would present it towards the end of the forum.
Each day they attended different classes. Chemistry at Massey University, psychology at AUT, molecular biology, AI, sports science, biological science, game technology, robotics, and to finish a visit to the Auckland Zoo.
For their project the team pitched developing an app that connected to a bouy that would show a live feed of the swimming area. This would give those in the water confidence to swim knowing no sharks were present and negate the need for shark nets.
Wyatt gave an excellent account of his time at the Forum and it was easy to see why he was selected for this and is the current Head Boy at Tokomairiro High School.

Gene - Technology
Genetic Technologies and our Environment: Deliberative Conversations ( From the April 8th meeting )

On the 8th of this month we were delighted to join the Milton Rotary for a workshop about genetic technologies for our environment. We brought down with us from Otago University a set of social science research equipment – a landscape, a toolbox, and a lot of little bits of paper – as a starting point for conversations. We wanted to hear what people think we should do as a country about various environmental issues, among them rats, wilding pines, myrtle rust and varroa mites. We asked small groups to decide what tools we should we have in our environmental toolbox. Should genetic technologies be among them? If so, what rules and systems should we have to make sure things go well?

It was really cool to watch people talking and listening respectfully to each other with the goal of finding agreement. Even in a world of social media and political polarisation, people can still find common ground around serious matters!

These are important conversations to be having now, with the natural environment facing a variety of threats and the government looking at changing the rules around genetic technologies. We know that people have different perspectives on genetic technologies – and can feel strongly about it. We also know that for many people it’s a technical and complicated science which is hard to feel comfortable and confident talking about. And we know that New Zealanders value and care for our natural environment, none more so than our rural communities.

We hope to be able to add to the voice of New Zealanders into the decision-making processes – and we thank everyone who took part. An extra thank you to Robin for helping us organise our visit.
