We had our biweekly meeting on 28 November and welcomed approx. 18 members and 3x guests.
Our guest speakers were Les Wilson and Grant McLean, from Dunedin Harbour Rotary. Les and Grant shared their planning for a trip to Vanuatu to build a preschool.
We also welcomed Declan Sheridan, Principal of Tokomairiro High School, who is planning on joining our club and continuing that strong link between the Milton Rotary Club and the high school.
Monday 12 December will be our final get-together for the year, with a potluck at our place – partners welcome.
Stay safe and healthy in the build-up to the festive season.

The Milton Rotary Club is sponsoring Oliver Gordon-Glassford, who has been accepted as a RYLA participant at the Queenstown programme running from 29 January - 3 February 2023. We wish him all the best for this event.
At our last meeting Rotarians Les Wilson and Grant McLean shared information about the Vanuatu Project. The project first started 12 years ago when some members of the Dunedin North Rotary Club build a block of toilets. Every few years groups of Rotarians have continued to go to Vanuatu to complete other projects. A few years ago, a group of four Milton Rotarians (Tiff, Peter M, Brendan and Suzie) to part in the project to rebuild some school accommodation buildings.
Six people went last year including two women, who taught the girls and women to sew. The building project was to create a building to withstand category 5 cyclone.
The project for April 2023 is to build a preschool in Amelvelt Village, a request from the Ministry of Education. Les and Grant are heading to Vanuatu this coming Saturday to scope things out.
The budget for the construction project is approximately $50,000. $21k has been raised through the Harbour Club and so far there is a commitment of $11k form other Rotary Clubs and further private donations ($7k). Approximately $22k is still to be raised. There is expected to be a group of 5-6 people going to Amelvelt to complete this project. Travellers are expected to fund themselves (through their club). The cost is approximately $4k per person for two weeks. If you are interested in being part of this project, please have a chat with Ross Pringle.
Thank you to Les and Grant for sharing their plans with our club and we wish them all the best with their continued fundraising.
Rex Spence has completed his replica 1930s butcher’s shop and the official opening is being held at 2pm this Saturday (3 Dec). R & J’s Butchery, named in honour of Rex’s wife Joyce, will house many of the butchery artefacts in his care which have been previously in the museum adjacent to his South Kill abattoir just north of Milton. The new butchery is situated out the back of the A & P grounds and well worth a look. Congratulations to Rex for completing this wonderful project.
A xmas get-together will be held at Ross and Jennifer Pringle’s on Monday 12 December. All members and partners are welcome. Ross will provide the meat for barbequing. Bring along a salad or dessert.
Please use the link below to register for this year's pre-release movie: The Lost King. See the booking form and attached flyer for more details. Partners, friends and colleagues are welcome. Please pay separately online to the Rotary bank account: details are shown on the booking form.
Early registration would be appreciated as we need to choose one of the four theatres early next week, and that will be guided by the numbers registered at that stage. Later registrations may not be possible if we have to choose one of the smaller theatres.
Proceeds will be forwarded to the Polio campaign on behalf of the clubs. If there are any questions, I'll attempt to assist: pfwilliams@xtra.co.nz
This sounds like a great movie and a great fundraiser - let's get a group of Milton Rotarians supporting the Polio cause.
