President's Message
Jackie Muir
Hello Everyone
Week 2 of lockdown - I hope you are all well and finding plenty to occupy your time, I know a lot of you are working from home which will have challenges but hopefully not too frustrating. For me personally I am not working due to having to travel to get to work but having no trouble filling in my days and getting a lot done inside and out at home.
Rotary of course is on hold but support for the community continues where we can. We have a roster at this stage Tuesday Thursday and Saturday assisting Nathan at Supervalue, counting people coming to and from the supermarket, for which he is very grateful. If anyone is able and interested in assisting, please give me a call. No pressure.
I have also been contacted by the Cancer Society who have enlisted support from all clubs to assist people at home with cancer to obtain essentials and they will let me know if there is anyone in need.
I am thinking of you all in what has become the new normal and sending best wishes to you all.
Take Care out there
Jackie

Stories
Speaker Arna Smith
The speaker at our last meeting was Arna Smith, the Coordinator at the Milton Community Hub.  Arna shared with us the remarkable growth of the support services provided at the hub that has occurred over the past two year.  In 2017-18 the hub attracted 830 clients and 1154 visitors; in 2018-19 these numbers rose to 1654 clients and 2800 visitors.   Arna suggested some of the reasons for this remarkable increase - there is now more openness about mental health; in 2016 the hub offered 2 services whereas in 2019 there are now 20 services offered at the hub.  Examples o these services are: Oranga Tamariki, Stopping Violence Dunedin, Community Otagp Law, ACC Counselling, Probation, Stop Smoking, Support Advocacy Social Services, Adventure Development, Mirror HQ, Well South, Plunket, Family Works - Budget Advice.

Arna identifies two of the major issues within our town are housing and poverty from seasonal work.  On Tuesdays a free market of bread and vegetables, donated from supermarkets, is held at the Hub and people are starting to come in and come back.  A stall of children’s clothing is also a feature of the hub.
Also based at the Hub is the Project Bruce team of Kim Schilling (Community Development worker) and Catherine Paul (Sustainability Projects Coordinator).  Together this amazing group of young women provide a programme of workshops and support for our community.
Thank you to Arna for taking the time to speak to us and share the success of what is happening at the Milton Community Hub.
We encourage all our members to pop in the hub and meet the lovely team - I am sure you will be welcomed for a cuppa and a chat.

Children's Fun Day
The club received a letter of thanks and photographs from the Children's Fun Day organiser Alice Muir, thanking the club for their sponsorship of the event.
David Vollweiler passed on a vote of thanks to Alice for all her organisation - an extremely enjoyable and well-run event!  (David had the privilege of taking his beautiful grand-daughter along).

Well done to Alice and the team.
Two Minute Talk
David Vollweiler shared a small part of recent trip overseas.  David and Helen flew into Berlin and visited his father's home .  While in Berlin they visited the Jewish Memorial which was a sobering experience.  Records at the museum are now all digital and entering the name "Vollweiler" led to twelve hits.  Most of these twelve were murdered by the Nazi's between 1939 and 1945.
David is now keen to do more research.
Thank you, David, for sharing this experience with us.
