President's Message

Hi Team

Last meeting’s two minute talk by Stephen about the dogs that are being trained to detect illness in people, was very interesting.  If it helps one person with early detection this has got to be a great.

On Thursday night Jim, Rob, Stephen and myself met up with the Balclutha Rotary Club, and four from the Taieri Rotary Club, to cook a BBQ for them after they had a guided tour of McLay Boats. Thanks, Steve - It was a good night and it was lucky that Jim doubled the meat order as all the food was clean up.

Guest speaker on the 11th October will be ORC Harbourmaster, Steve Rushbrook, and it sounds like he has had an interesting career.

So, keep the wind in your face, be safe and look out to others that may need help.

Nga mihi nui,

Colin

Stories
McLay Boats Visit

On Monday14 June, 11 members of the Dunedin Central Rotary Club joined the Milton Rotary Club for a meal at the Kink in the Road before a visit to McLay Boats.

President Stephen Woodhouse welcomed the visitors and gave a brief overview of the Clutha District and the activities of the Milton Rotary Club.

Steve McLay then shared the history and development of his company from the decision to first start building boats in 1986 and moving into the new building 14 years ago.

The market is primarily New Zealand and Australia, and the biggest issue, at present, is securing necessary materials from overseas to complete orders.  Completed boats are transported by truck around NZ and sent by container to Australia.

Steve currently employs 26 full-time and 2 part-time staff, including 9 boat builders (but needs another one!).  He has never been as busy as he currently is, with orders going out more than a year ahead!

A special thank you to Steve for opening his factory to our Rotarians and for sharing his amazing business with us.

Rotary NZ honours Dr Ashley Bloomfield

This story has been 'borrowed' from the Rotary Club of Mosgiel Bulletin

Irene represents District 9980 at PHF Award ceremony in Wellington recently.

Dr Ashley Bloomfield was honoured by Rotary NZ when the DG's of each district meet at a private ceremony in Wellington on Thursday to present Dr Ashley Bloomfield with a 5 Sapphire Paul Harris award.  The award and the 5 sapphires (=6 PHF's) represent the 6 districts of Rotary in New Zealand.

District 9980 District Governor Dylan Murray was unable to attend and asked Irene if she would stand in for him as she was already in Wellington for work that week.

Irene reports that it was a lovely relaxed event. Each representative spoke briefly about the relevance of the award and likening the work of Dr Bloomfield keeping NZ safe to the work that Rotary does in their own communities to support.  An excerpt from the speech written by 9980 DG Dylan and presented by Irene.... we see a parallel between your continuing high performance and Rotary’s ideals and values.

In 1943, Rotary International adopted the Four-Way Test which is a moral and ethical code that guides our behaviour, decision-making and personal conduct.

Of the things we think say and do we ask ourselves the following:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

When you think about the four tenets: Truthfulness; Fairness; Goodwill & Friendships, providing Benefit to all, I think there is no doubt that in your work with the pandemic, you have applied a high moral and ethical code to all decisions and all communications with New Zealand.

It is partly because of your honesty, integrity, and logical reasoning that we have followed your recommendations throughout and will continue to do so.

Dr Bloomfield, on behalf of District 9980 we thank you and recognise you with a Paul Harris Fellowship.

Irene reported that Dr Bloomfield seemed genuinely thrilled to receive the reward. He spoke about his work and also his plans for the future. Once borders are open and things quieten down he hopes to take a biking trip through Europe with his wife. He was assured by some of those in attendance that wearing his PHF is a ticket to hospitality all over the world.
