President's Message 22 March 2023

Kia ora

Last meeting we welcomed approx 14 members and were to host Chris Till who was invited to give a talk on the new Mountain Bike track in Balclutha, however, Chris fell ill and Robin Taylor, who is also a member of the club, filled in for him. Robin gave us a run down on the newly formed track just out of Clutha on the Kaitangata road near the railway overbridge.  It sounds like a very good facility for the young and the foolish ! I have a mate my age who rode the Sticky Forrest track in Wanaka trying to keep up with his son and fell breaking some bones!

Colin Calteaux gave us an interesting 2 minute talk on the new water pipes they are presently installing from Milton to Waihola.

We also had updates from those present who were involved in the most recent tramps and cycle trails and I think we have about two or three left to finish a very busy season.

It was agreed that our next meeting will be pushed out to April 17th .  We would like a good turn out to listen to Brian Griffen, who will be talking about the very successful Lake to Sea trail ride.

See you all Monday 17th, at the usual venue.
Regards
Ross

Tramping Reports
Stewart Island -  Stephen, Ross F & Robin
6am start at the Leviathan.  Day 1 - one person sprained his ankle so Stephen carried his pack.  After consideration, he and another person decided to return to Oban by boat.  The rest of the trip went very well - albeit with a missing satellite phone (ask Robin about that one!!)

South Coast Walk - Suzie, Tim & Ross F
The was mostly a flat walk along the coast which involved crossing four viaducts.  The jetboat ride was cancelled due to lack of water, however, the group were lucky enough to be brought out by helicopter - a treat enjoyed by all!

Humpbridge - Stephen & others
It was a bit wet at the top pf the track and col the next day, however, the views were good.  One lady slipped and fractured her ankle.  A helicopter came in and took her to Kew Hospital.  Apart from that, it was a great trip, with about half the group being return trampers.

Stewart Island - Jim Murdoch picked the group up at the end and said the trampers all talked really positively about both this trip and the other trips they had been on.  Most were from Hamilton & Auckland and half had done tramping club trips previously.  They were full of appreciation for the opportunities afforded to them.

A2O - Peter & Sue Stewart, David & Helen Vollweiler, Jennifer Pringle - arrived home last night.
Ross reported that Jennifer loved the trip.  More info to come.

The final trip of the season is to Mt Aspiring Lodge 7 - 11 April.
Two Minute Talk
Colin Calteaux shared with us the work that is being done creating a new water main from Milton to Waihola. (There was a question about the current quality, or lack there of, of Milton water!) Just over 6km had been completed by our meeting (27 March).

The pipe is placed 1.2m in the ground, with first lots of pipe being 355mm diameter.  From Pan Pac on the pipe is 250mm diameter.  Instead of 'bending' the pipe, a change of direction requires right angled joins to be made.

It is a challenging job - only 26km to go!!

Speaker 17 April
Brian Griffen is coming along to talk about the Lake to Sea Trail Ride, a trail bike ride which has been going for the past 20 years which has raised considerable funds for Tokomairiro High School PTA.  Our club member, Steve McLay, was also one of the original brains behind the event when he was president of the PTA.

Brian will share his experiences and the work involved in setting up such an event.  Come along and hear what Griff has to share.
