Presidents message

Hello Rotarians,

Thank you to those members able to attend another successful evening cutting and splitting firewood last Tuesday. It is a very busy time of year for club members with Tramping season in full swing. Rob will update us on Monday night how things are going.

Christine Cutler, President of the Balclutha Rotary Club will be at our meeting this week to update us on their work and look at an opportunity for a joint meeting. Next weekend is the Child Cancer appeal, we will collect names at our meeting to man the collection at Super Value on the morning of Saturday 27th.

The Taieri Club has organized a tour of Historical homes and gardens on the Taieri, see the brochure below if interested.

We also have an opportunity as a Club to purchase the Rotary Anniversary book “Mana Tangata” People of Action. Telling the story of Rotary in NZ over the last 100 years and the Pacific over 85, it is a 300 page book we can purchase at a discount by February 28th.

We have received an update from Blessed Box, “We made and delivered 15 meals, 150 bliss balls and 90 iced cupcakes to mothers and families in the Clutha District with a squad of 17 enthusiastic volunteers. We are looking forward to the next cook on Saturday the 27th of February!” It is clear they have got off to a successful start.

See you Monday.

Stephen Woodhead.

Stories
Milton St John's
Speaker last meeting - Scott Weatherall
Scott comes from a background of Search & Rescue (he has named Volunteer of the Year) and St John’s.  In December, Scott took on the position of paid paramedic at Milton St John, to lead the transition to a volunteer, first response station.

The First Response status of the Milton Ambulance means that they respond to a call and treat the patient.  At the same time another team is dispatched to transport any patient to hospital – this may be Balclutha, Mosgiel etc or air ambulance.

Scott’s focus is on
  1. Supporting the current staff.  He has been involved in discussions with all staff members about what they would like to do moving forward.  This is about supporting our community to support our people.
  2. Supporting the volunteer staff to realise they are capable of dealing with the issues that arise.
  3. Moving to a volunteer station manager and training people to manage different areas / tasks.

The overall themes have been retention, reengagement and recruitment.
Retention – look after our own first
Reengagement – Mid-January and into the new year – staff are keen to move forward
Recruitment – a station open-day was held.600 flyers have been hand delivered in the community. Scott has spent time meeting with people within the community.

Scott is in Milton every day and his hours are flexible so he can work with each of the volunteer teams to help them upskill.

Julie Aitken has been appointed as Volunteer Station Manager. There are 5 new volunteers and, if we can get a 6th volunteer, training will be organised in the Milton community. The aim is to get 15 active members; there are currently 9 active members.

What is our roe in supporting Milton St John’s – encourage more volunteers

Thank you to Scott for sharing the information with us and for the work he does in our local communities.
Two Minute Spot
Glenis shared the problems she has had trying to get a mathematics teacher in from overseas and the shortage of well-qualified mathematics and digital technology teachers in New Zealand.

She has appointed a Mathematics teacher from South Africa to a permanent position at Tokomairiro High School in February 2020, to begin at the start of term 2, April 2020.  Then Covid hit and the borders closed.

Even though there were no Mathematics teachers available in New Zealand, throughout the year,  Immigration NZ would not grant an exemption, and this still remains the case.

There was also an issue getting a Digital Technology.  Numerous applications are received from overseas
(people want to get into New Zealand) but no suitable applications form within New Zealand.    There was, however, an application from a well-qualified  young man from the Czech Republic who has been in New Zealand since January 2020.  He didn't have a work via however he was offered the position, with the hope the work visa would now be issued.

This Week's Speaker
We are thrilled to have David Yilma as this week's speaker.

David is the new Digital Technology teacher at Tokomairiro High School.  Glenis will introduce David and interview him regarding his experiences of teaching in many parts of the world and what brought him to New Zealand.  He has lots to share and will be happy to answer any questions.

PS He has just had his Work Visa, to be employed by the Tokomairiro High School Board of Trustees, granted for three years!

We hope to do visits or zoom sessions with clubs in the new year to further promote the conference - but I'm sure you've all had a good heads up from DG Dylan.

MILTON ROTARY members - Jackie and Glenis are organising a group to go to the conference.  Let either of us know if you are keen to come along and join in – the conferences are always great fun!  Waimate 19 – 21 March 2021

Parting Thought
David Vollweiler share this with us:

I finally realised that people are prisoners of their phones – that is why it is called a “cell” phone.
