President's Message

Hi Team

Last meeting’s two minute talk by Stephen about the dogs that are being trained to detect illness in people, was very interesting.  If it helps one person with early detection this has got to be a great.

On Thursday night Jim, Rob, Stephen and myself met up with the Balclutha Rotary Club, and four from the Taieri Rotary Club, to cook a BBQ for them after they had a guided tour of McLay Boats. Thanks, Steve - It was a good night and it was lucky that Jim doubled the meat order as all the food was clean up.

Guest speaker on the 11th October will be ORC Harbourmaster, Steve Rushbrook, and it sounds like he has had an interesting career.

So, keep the wind in your face, be safe and look out to others that may need help.

Nga mihi nui,

Colin

Visit from District Governor Dylan Murray
At our last meeting on 7 September we were privileged to have District Governor Dylan Murray to our club.
Dylan's messages to us were clear: Look out for new club members - there will be people just waiting to be asked.
Look after your new club members - get them involved in club activities and make them feel valued.  We need to understand what potential members of Rotary would like out of Rotary.
When we achieve wonderful things, celebrate them - share in bulletins, on the website, through social media, local newspapers etc.
Develop enthusiasm.

Dylan encouraged us to think about other ways we can run our club - invite overseas speakers via zoom, meet with other clubs in our district, other NZ Districts and overseas.
If Rotary is to survive and prosper there might be a pool of people who want to meet in a different format - e-clubs, satellite clubs, etc.  New clubs must be seen as complementary, not competition.

He encouraged us to think about what we want our club to look like in 5 years time.

Dylan reminded us that the 2020-2021 is the 100 year celebration of Rotary teaming up with UNICEF in Australia and NZ.
The key centenary project across Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific is the regional ‘Rotary Give Every Child a Future’ Pacific immunisation project.  Its aim is to vaccinate 100,000 children across nine Pacific Island countries against rotavirus, pneumococcal and cervical cancer and establish sustainable vaccination programmes in each country.

Dylan finished up by inviting us all to Waimate 19-21 March 2021 for the District 9980 Conference - the first time the conference has been held in Waimate.
Meet the Candidates
That was a great night and very informative.  Personally, I have never been to a political candidates event before - it was truly a very worthwhile experience.  Thank you to Stephen Woodhead for being such a great chairperson.  A special thankyou also the the team from Balclutha Rotary for their organisation.

Rotary Youth Exchange Student
Amyn Amende has been our Rotary Youth Exchange student in Germany since the beginning of the year.
Here is Amyn's latest newsletter:

Hello again Milton
For those that aren't familiar with me, I am Amyn. I have been in Germany for 8 months now. I love this beautiful place and the people very much and have made many friends and learned the German language, which makes me happy as it’s part of my roots. I even visited Weimar, the Town my Opa comes from. It's a beautiful old place with much history; this makes me happy as I have always loved history. There is even a house there that Martin Luther was living in.

I think one of the biggest moments for me was realizing that I was going days without speaking English sometimes. At the start this thought was weird but also interesting. I often wonder how different it will be changing back.

In the holidays that just passed I travelled a lot with my host family. We went north to cities such as Düsseldorf, Köln, Frankfurt and places all around these. I even met up with Robert Schlömann in Essen who many from Toko will remember as he was with us for half a year. I stayed with him for a few days and he took me to many places around and in his city. We even went to the Rhine and looked at and toured many of the Castles from the 800s and others a little younger around 1100 or 1200s. I have many photos and many stories to share but there is not enough paper to write it.

I can’t say how much this has changed me as a person. I have a great mindset now, just way more positive than my old one. I used to feel trapped somehow. It's hard to explain but for those that knew me, you know I wasn’t always the best. I'm proud to say how much my mindset has grown. Even when bad things happen and this year has been a year for that for everyone, I manage to keep a cool head and keep going and this is something I used to struggle with. I recommend to every young mind reading this, when you’re old enough take a trip somewhere, even somewhere else in the New Zealand. Go without family and friends; without anything tying you to the old you. That's when you find who you really are. At least that is what has happened to me and many of the other exchange students I met here from other corners of the world. I will see you guys and our beautiful country soon.

Liebe grüße
Best regards

Amyn Amende
