President's Message

Hi Team

Last meeting’s two minute talk by Stephen about the dogs that are being trained to detect illness in people, was very interesting.  If it helps one person with early detection this has got to be a great.

On Thursday night Jim, Rob, Stephen and myself met up with the Balclutha Rotary Club, and four from the Taieri Rotary Club, to cook a BBQ for them after they had a guided tour of McLay Boats. Thanks, Steve - It was a good night and it was lucky that Jim doubled the meat order as all the food was clean up.

Guest speaker on the 11th October will be ORC Harbourmaster, Steve Rushbrook, and it sounds like he has had an interesting career.

So, keep the wind in your face, be safe and look out to others that may need help.

Nga mihi nui,

Colin

Stories
District Award

Congratulations Balclutha and Milton Rotary Clubs for being awarded the District Club Collaboration Award for completing the combined projects organised for the 2019-2020 District Conference.  This is reward for the hard work by Past District Governor Tania and the team of Conference organisers -  and of course all those Rotarians who have got out there to help.  A well deserves award.

Tramping Trips
Stewart Island – Suzie
Flat crossing and great weather for the trip.  A great team. One of the participants shared lots of history about the area around the neck of Stewart Island as one of their ancestors were buried there.
Humpbridge – Stephen
A challenging trip, however, the weather was perfect.  There was a group of 30 on the trip including an 82year old.
Routeburn / Greenstone – Steve
20 participants + 3 leaders.  The weather was great.  One of the participants was a 83 year old man who was a great entertainer, however, he was not good at getting up in the morning.  He would repack his gear every morning and take at least an hour!  Michelle Weil, from the Waihola Youth Camp, was a brand-new leader on the camp.  While on the tramp she managed to take a photo of an albino deer.
Milton Health Trust
25th Anniversary of the Milton Health Trust – Friday 12 March
Rob Wilton talked about the Milton Health Trust and what a success story it has been for the Milton District.  The aim of the Trust is to keep people in their own homes for as long as they want to be there.  Helen Vollweiler has been the chairperson for 9 years.  The Rotary Club had a steering committee, of which Rob Wilton, Colin Brown and many others were members, and contributed to the set-up of the Trust. Rob  described the actions taken by Colin Brown to make sure the Health Trust was signed off by the Southern District Health Board.

Well done to all the team involved in the development of the Milton HealthTrust - a great asset for our local community.
Last Meeting's Speaker
Speaker Lucy Coutts - RYLA Attendee sponsored by the Milton Rotary Club
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, RYLA 2021 was held at the Christian Youth Camp in Queenstown from 29 January to 3 February.  Lucy Coutts comes form Invercargill where she works for a marketing and consulting company, Marketing South.  She shared with us some of the projects she has worked on.  One of those is Hawthorndale Care Village, a dementia care facility in Invercargill. The concept replicates everyday life in a suburban neighbourhood within a safe, secure setting.  The design of the village, the philosophy and way its residents are cared for is centred around evidence that suggests familiarity, comfort and stimulation has the greatest Impact on overall health and well-being. So far, $26m has been raised towards the development of this facility.
The focus at the RYLA camp was on career progression, collaboration, public speaking and teamwork.  There were two to three guest speakers each day.  These include people such as Laura Douglas, founder of Real Country, a tourism farm expo.  Another speaker was a Sir Edmund Hilliary Fellow, who left the Gaza Strip with three children and a husband to come to New Zealand.
Team challenges were held, eg putting up a shelter box ten and a community service project was completed.  This project involved creating an orienteering course for all ages and abilities.  First the gully had to be cleared.  Lucy’s team then set about writing riddles as clues to each away point.
A Community Contribution saw the participants putting baskets together for Happiness House, a Queenstown Community Support Centre.
As well as working fulltime, Lucy is also studying towards an MBA degree online through the University of Otago.  This involves 20 hours a week study – on top of her fulltime position.  She is a very committed and dedicated young woman who has a great future ahead of her.
We wish her all the very best.

Dean's Antics
Last Saturday our fellow club member, Dean, was in Balclutha with his sons to buy some shoes.  They walked back along the street to their car and some people were watching him stumble along, as Dean does. Dean got the kids into the car to go to the park then, next minute, a policeman arrives to breath test him – at 10.30am in the morning!
Dean explained his situation to the police officer who laughed along with him, then still carried out the breath test!  Good thing Dean has a great sense of humour!
Combined Meeting with Balclutha Rotary

Rotary Balclutha and Milton Fellowship Meeting, Thursday 27th May, Balclutha T&C

Bruce Stewart Leadership Programme
Community and construction his pleasure | Otago Daily Times Online NewsOn Tuesday 16 February 2021 the launch of the Bruce Stewart Leadership Programme was to have happened on what would have been Bruce’s 90th birthday.  This programme has been developed to support people from the Tokomairiro region in learning and leadership.  Unfortunately, the launch had to be cancelled due to Covid level 2 restrictions.
Bruce has left a legacy to support future leaders, among people of the Tokomairiro community, in the development of leadership skills.  There are two funding rounds per year (May and October), and up to $50,000 per year available.
This is an amazing contribution to the community and opportunity for individuals.  It truly does represent the kind of man Bruce Stewart was, and his love for the Tokomairiro community.
Check our the website http://www.brucestewartleadership.org/ for more information.
