President's Message

Kia Ora

We had our bi-weekly meeting on 31st Oct and welcomed approx. 17 members and 2x guests.

Our guest speaker was Janet Hewson from Dunedin Harbour Rotary. Janet gave a very interesting and up beat report on ROMAC - explanations later in this bulletin.

We also welcomed Ross Flett, whose father Colin was a long time member and of course Ross has been involved in leading many a tramp for the tramping club, over the years.

Last Monday 7th we had a good turn out of Rotarians to help Mark Anderson repot native plants at the Toko High Hort area ending with with a B.B.Q.

We look forward to a good turn out at next meeting on the 14th Nov.

Regards Ross P.
Stories
Reports for 31 October
Manuka Gorge – on Wed 26 October a small group of members met at the Manuka Gorge Tunnel area to tidy up the vegetation and plant more natives.  Sycammore trees were chopped down and pittasporum, kowhai and cabbage trees were planted.  These were all grown from seedlings through the work Mark Anderson is doing.

Tramping Club Report – 98% of the trips are booked out for the 2022-23 season.  A fuller report to follow next bulletin.

Milton Community Parish Christmas Tree Decoration competition – Milton Rotary gained second place last year.  Entry in by 11 November.
Two Minute Spot - Jackie Muir
Jackie is a Victim Advisor with the Ministry of Justice and she shared some changes that have occurred about how offenders are dealt with. It was great to hear of the situations Jackie deals with as part of her role.
Thank you, Jackie.
District Grant: Empowering Women in Times of Disaster – Opportunity to be Involved

This Multi-Club District Grant is underway District 9999 wide with Rotary Clubs and Days-for-Girls Teams working to ensure that there is a Days-for-Girls Kit provided for each RNZWCS Emergency Response Kit (ERK) deployed into the Pacific Islands from 2023. Your active participation with the preparation of the Days-for-Girls Kits would be welcomed by those who are already working on the project. Sewing skill is an advantage or operation of an overlocker or sewing machine. To learn more about Days-for-Girls www.daysforgirls.org or locally the facebook pages of Days for Girls Nelson, Christchurch or Dunedin.

Days-for-Girls Dunedin are looking forward to holding a Sewing Bee for ‘newbies’ on Sunday 11 December, 1.00 – 5.00pm, at Kaikorai Valley College Fabrics Room. They already have some expressions of interest from our Rotary family.   To find out more about actively participating please contact Debra Gibbs (Richmond Rotary) deb.garry56@gmail.com
Rotary District 9999 Pre-Release Movie Night
Peter Williams shared the following information:

Please use the link below to register for this year's pre-release movie: The Lost King. See the booking form and attached flyer for more details. Partners, friends and colleagues are welcome. Please pay separately online to the Rotary bank account: details are shown on the booking form.

Early registration would be appreciated as we need to choose one of the four theatres early next week, and that will be guided by the numbers registered at that stage. Later registrations may not be possible if we have to choose one of the smaller theatres.

Proceeds will be forwarded to the Polio campaign on behalf of the clubs. If there are any questions, I'll attempt to assist: pfwilliams@xtra.co.nz
This sounds like a great movie and a great fundraiser - let's get a group of Milton Rotarians supporting the Polio cause.
Speaker - Janet Hewson
ROMAC – Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children.

ROMAC commenced in March 1988 out of the actions of an Australian Rotarian.  A New Zealand region was formally established in 2004 and treated its first patient, from Vanuatu, in December 2005.

ROMAC has treated 537 children and involves 20 developing countries.  The treatment of each child cost $50-60k.

Mission Statement - ROMAC provides surgical treatment for children in Australia and New Zealand from developing countries from our Pacific region in the form of life giving and/or dignity restoring surgery not accessible to them in their home country.

In New Zealand, children come to Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch.

40+ cases waiting. Hopefully November to bring children to NZ ROMAC faces the great challenge of having to prioritise due to the large drop in revenue owing to the COVID restrictions on fundraising.

Volunteer Rotarians are often involved in supporting children to get to New Zealand – immigration, interpreters, working with Ronald McDonald House, providing transport, etc.  The children from some islands often don’t have a birth certificate, which does cause issues with immigration.

Janet Hewson and Ross Pringle.

Janet is the representative to the ROMAC board for the lower South Island.
Thank you to Janet for her very informative presentation.
