Suzie then introduced Rachel Harrison from RYDA (Road Safety Education)

Rachel traced the story of the RYDA programme from its launch in New Zealand in 2007.  In that time it has reached over 150 000 students. It is Australasia’s largest road safety education programme and is not just for high schools.  There is a programme to support parents as they navigate supporting their young people to learn to drive as well.
In addition to the nuts and bolts of road safety, the programme contains an emphasis on Resilience and Life Skills as well.  The intention is to give young people the skills to make informed decisions and adopt safer strategies.
Rachel emphasised that graphic shock and fear tactics do not work in the long term.  The focus is on attitude, awareness and behavioural change.  Learner drivers tend to be the safest drivers, while young people on their Restricted license tend to have the greatest number of crashes, for a number of reasons.
Student reaction to the training they receive is generally very positive, according to thorough post course evaluation surveys.  These surveys generate a great deal of high quality data that steers decision making as the programme continues and evolves.
The programme works hard to keep costs to schools low.  Funding from Rotary plays a key role in ensuring RYDA remains affordable and accessible.
Rachel’s presentation was followed by a Q & A session, and Allan thanked Rachel for her presentation.
