In 2020, Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand provided almost 3,700 families with accommodation and support free of charge at its facilities throughout New Zealand.
As a rural community we understand the challenges of not living close to a major hospital so it will be interesting to hear the two speakers who will share their family's Ronald McDonald House stories at our meeting with the Balclutha Club on the 27th.
Venue is the Balclutha Town and Country Club, a partners night, two course meal for $20, 5.30pm for 6.00pm. Please let me know if you wish to attend.
Jim had a very successful visit to the District Council LTP hearings to explain our proposal to develop a walkway on Crane Road, Waihola as a memorial to Peter Vollweiler. As a follow up Richard Davison from the ODT has been in touch and Rob and I are going to meet him on site at Waihola to explain the project, keep an eye on the ODT.
The evenings speaker was Gregg Caldwell . Greg is the son of well known past member John Caldwell. Gregg has spent 30 years working in the mining industry around the world. Most recently he has worked in the UK commissioning re-cycling plants. He returned to NZ 3 years ago with an idea to develop recycling e- waste in NZ. Greggs company, Southern Recycling is setting up in Stirling to recycle e-waste. The plant is on route from China and he hopes to be operational by the end of June. They intend to extract high value raw minerals from e-waste - gold, silver, copper, and aluminium. Glass will also be ground down by the plant which can be used in builders chip or sand chip. Greggs other project is looking at setting up a Pyrolysis and batching plant. With business partner Simon Hales they are investigating potential sites in Otago. The plant will make biofuels from end of life tyres and farm plastic. This was a really interesting presentation - We wish him well with this venture.

Jim Murdoch reported on his presentation on behalf the club for the "Peter Vollweiler Memorial Walkway" at the Clutha District Council Long Term Plan hearing. Jim felt the clubs submission received a very positive response from the hearing committee. He noted that it was one of the few submissions not just asking for a cash handout.
Note the next meeting is a joint meeting with Balclutha Rotary on Thursday May 27that the Town and Country. This is a partners night ( no Monday night meeting ) Meet at White Horse Inn 5.30pm to car pool.
