President's Message 18 September 2023

Presidents Message
Hello everyone it was good to see Milton Primary has a motivated & highly competent principal at the helm to steer them through the Challenges they are facing. I am sure the school has support from all of our members , will send them a letter of support to help them with their funding Application to the Otago foundation soon .
Thanks to everyone who helped with the meet the candidates at the town hall on Wednesday night especially Stephen for organizing & moderating the on the night. It was a good turnout out of around 70 people all the candidates were impressed with how the evening went.
This Monday we are participating in a workshop held by Otago University about genetics & there use. We will skip our normal meeting format & get straight into the workshop after dinner.
On Saturday the 30th of September Dunedin Central is hosting a Charity auction night @ the Green Island Rugby Club, if are keen on a good night out talk to Jackie it would be good to get a car load or 2 to support Dunedin Central.
What’s App, if you haven’t Joined our rotary group yet send Dean a txt on 0274174257 & he will sort you out. There May be an unwanted prize for the last to Join.

Cheers
Robin
Stories
2-minute talk
Kerry entertained us with his description of the New Zealand Law Group Conference he attended in New York with his nephew. We are not sure if he actually made any sessions apart from the dinner on a boat on the Hudson river. He stayed in Times Square and took in the sites of New York and then spent time recuperating in Hawaii on the way home.
Notices
- The Taylor Park fence upgrade is waiting for the Council to work through a process that allows service clubs to carry out the work. Under their regulations we need to be an approved contractor which requires a certain amount of acreditation. Stephen is in dissussion with Andrew Haulage who as an existing approved contractor  we may be able to work under.
- Next Wednesday evening ( September 13th ) is a meet the candidates night at the Town Hall. Helpers are required from 6.30pm.
- Ross Pringle and Marty Clark spoke to the Dunedin North Rotary about their time in Vanuatu.
- Stephen Woodhead updated us on the swimming pool/library project. Design is progressing. A flyer will be in the Genesis outlining ways people can support the project.

Evenings Speaker
Carl Schiller (Presiding Member of Milton Primary School Board of Trustees) and Kaela McGregor (Principal) shared the Milton Primary School journey of supporting students and families. Milton Primary School is an effective, proactive school with over 30 strategies to support students in their wellbeing and achievement. The school has a strong staff and a supportive board. Despite these innovative and effective practices, there remains a cohort of the school who require further support within social and emotional needs. Therefore, Milton Primary School has a steering group with key community members who are working with Barnardos to gain funding for a social worker. With over 80 families in the school, this is a great opportunity to start supporting our wider Milton Community. They are seeking support from a range of funders, including Rotary. This could include monetary support, a letter of support, or sharing skills from members to support this process.
