President's Message

Hi Team

Last meeting’s two minute talk by Stephen about the dogs that are being trained to detect illness in people, was very interesting.  If it helps one person with early detection this has got to be a great.

On Thursday night Jim, Rob, Stephen and myself met up with the Balclutha Rotary Club, and four from the Taieri Rotary Club, to cook a BBQ for them after they had a guided tour of McLay Boats. Thanks, Steve - It was a good night and it was lucky that Jim doubled the meat order as all the food was clean up.

Guest speaker on the 11th October will be ORC Harbourmaster, Steve Rushbrook, and it sounds like he has had an interesting career.

So, keep the wind in your face, be safe and look out to others that may need help.

Nga mihi nui,

Colin

Speaker last meeting
Donna and Peter Buxton (Balclutha Rotary Club) reported on their trip on a Friendship Exchange to New Orleans – a combined 9980 and 9940 trip to District 6840 – Louisiana and Mississippi.
They had the opportunity to visit four Rotary clubs – all lunchtime clubs which were very tight on time.  All meetings started with a pledge of allegiance to the American flag and singing the national anthem.
They shared a photograph of a 23 mile bridge which went from New Orleans which crossed Lake Pontchartrain to Covington.

Peter and Donna had a very full programme for the time they were in New Orleans with very little downtime.  One of the events was a cemetery tour which was fascinating as the bodies were not buried below ground due to the swamp land.  The body was left for 1 year and 1 day before remains were put in a plastic bag and shelved. The bag remained there until the shelf became full at which time the bag was shafted to the cellar.

The group also had the chance to visit an old sugar plantation, once full of slaves.  When the slaves were emancipated, they went off for a short time before returning as they had nowhere to go.

The madigras was held while they were there and Donna shared a number of interesting photographs of the different floats in the parade.  The bright colours – purple (justice), Green (faith) and gold (power) where evident everywhere, even in their special celebration cake, king cake.  The amount of rubbish left after the parade was a site to behold.  It is interesting that there is no recycling of rubbish in New Orleans.

The group also took part in a project planting trees in a dog park, visited a senior citizen, and attended a church service at St Charles, where a service has been held every day as long as the madigras has been going.

Donna also commented on the amazing music – jazz everywhere.  One band they saw included a 93 year old on the piano and a 73 year old on the clarinet.

Both Donna and Peter highly recommended the trip and encourage people to take any chance to go on a friendship exchange if it comes your way.  The group from New Orleans will do an exchange to Wellington and Otago in the future.

Thank you to Donna and Peter for sharing their experience with us.

DG Dylan Murray our Guest Monday 7 Sept

Our District Governor is ready and on the job with the 9980 leadership team, and will be our guest on Monday 7 September.

Senior Sergeant Dylan Murray is back in uniform in his role, after spending about 13 years as a detective. I was always sneaking back into uniform whenever I got the chance." The role of senior sergeant was one he had been working towards his entire career, and he was grateful for the opportunity.. – Now Officer in Charge for Rural South Canterbury; he has been 28 years in the NZ Police including overseas service in the Solomon Islands (2005)

Murray was born in Timaru and completed his secondary studies at Timaru Boys' High School, before going to Otago University to get a degree in economics.

Dylan has furthered his tertiary education, gaining diplomas in both accounting and business studies.  The analytical skills he has developed are put to good use in his police work, and helpful for Rotary. He said he was leading by example in what he thought a good police officer should do - be an active part of the community, so they cared about the community they worked in.

Outside of his job, Dylan is a keen basketballer in his home town of Waimate, plays golf and is treasurer of the Maungati Golf Club. However, he said his handicap was not publishable. "It's pretty average."

He completed a very satisfying year as President of the Rotary Club of Waimate.

Has been over 8 years as a Rotary member, including leading a team of Rotarians to Turkey in a “Peace is Possible” initiative in 2016.

Part owner and brewer – Hunter Hills Brewing, Waimate.

Dylan’s family: - Partner: Rebecca Aitchison;  a local Police Constable and a past Secretary of the Waimate Rotary Club.

Children: Aidan (20), Serena (15), Caitlin (4), Niamh (3), Fionn (1)
