President's Message

Hi Team

Last meeting’s two minute talk by Stephen about the dogs that are being trained to detect illness in people, was very interesting.  If it helps one person with early detection this has got to be a great.

On Thursday night Jim, Rob, Stephen and myself met up with the Balclutha Rotary Club, and four from the Taieri Rotary Club, to cook a BBQ for them after they had a guided tour of McLay Boats. Thanks, Steve - It was a good night and it was lucky that Jim doubled the meat order as all the food was clean up.

Guest speaker on the 11th October will be ORC Harbourmaster, Steve Rushbrook, and it sounds like he has had an interesting career.

So, keep the wind in your face, be safe and look out to others that may need help.

Nga mihi nui,

Colin

10 minute talk
Stephen introduced his brother-in-law Fergus Moffat. Fergus grew up on the family farm in South Otago and attended South Otago High School. Farming wasn't for him but a fascination with trains lead him to joining the railways in 1970. He was amongst the last cohort to obtain a steam ticket. Fergus transferred to Ranfurly, later to Taumaranui and then Wellington. In 1981 he moved to Port Headland driving trains for a mining company. He then moved to Perth and worked as a private contractor in Western Australia. Fergus's next move was to Malaysia to operate a tourist train. He then joined Orient to operate the Great Australian Express. The SARS pandemic caused a tourist downturn and the mothballing of the Express. Fergus was asked to become a transport safety investigator in Melbourne. He has been in this role for 15 years and reports to the Transport Minister on issues involving trains, trams, buses and shipping. Fergus gave a really interesting snapshot of his working life.

Clutha Gold Cycle Trail
David Vollweiler updated the club on the Cycle Trail. The concept was floated in 2015 by Rob Hewett Chairman of Clutha Development. Seeding funding for the initial feasibility study was provided by Milton Rotary, Lawrence Lions, Bruce Stewart and Clutha Development. Eion Mills was employed initially by Clutha Development and later by Southern Land to negotiate land access with landowners. In 2017 the Provincial Growth Fund granted 6.5 million. This along with 1.5 million from the New Zealand Cycle Trail Trust, 1 million from the CDC, 500,000 from the Community Trust of Otago and the construction of 3.8km of trail by Calder Stewart on their land is funding the project. Construction is underway on sections in the Manuka Gorge and between Tulloch Road and Creighton Road. Further sections will go to tender shortly. Consent has been lodged for the Waihola section. The Clutha Gold Trail trust appreciates the support of Milton Rotary with helping get this project off the ground.
Peter Vollweiler Memorial Track - Waihola

When Mayor Brian Cadogan was visiting the club recently, he suggested we need to get the Peter Vollwiler Memorial Track on to the District Plan.  It is expected it will take a few years for this to start. The club needs to put money away each year to go towards the development of the track.  Stephen Woodhouse is fleshing out a submission to go to the council.
Club Visit – Dunedin Central Club

Stephen has been working with Neville Hall, President of the Dunedin Central Rotary Club, to plan an inter-club visit to Milton Rotary Club.  The plan is to have a meal together and a presentation about the Milton Club, before for a visit to McLay Boats.  We are looking at late May or June.
More information coming.
