Last Mondays meeting was very good with Glenis speaking about how much Tokomairiro High School has changed since she started, and the changes still to come in the education system.
Special mention to those who attended Tautuku camp last weekend, it looked like you had a great time, and have done an excellent job with the spruce up.
Also this weekend was the PETS day at the High School, thank you to Glenis, Susan, Luisa, Jennifer, Steven, and Jim for helping out with all the great food.
Lastly a reminder that names are still required by the 10th of November 2021 for Tania Lowery celebration on the 25th November 2021 in Balcutha.

K9 Medical Detection NZ www.k9md.org.nz is a registered Charitable Trust comprised of a dedicated team working to improve the health of all New Zealanders by using specially trained dogs working in a controlled clinical environment to assist in the detection of cancer and other diseases.
NZ has one of the highest cancer rates in the world, 1 woman dies from Ovarian cancer every 48 hours, 600 die from breast cancer and 600 men die from prostate cancer each year. Every week 23 die from bowel cancer.
K9 are currently training dogs to detect bowel and prostate cancer
Here are some of the team of dogs who are being trained at the centre at Invermay:
Levi von Heisenberg
K9MD Levi is the first dog in the country to be raised by K9 Medical Detection New Zealand and specifically trained for the early detection of bowel cancer in urine.
Levi von Heisenberg is a large, strong, confident German shepherd who loves to work and lives with Pauline, K9MD's CEO. When he's not detecting cancer samples in K9MD's training centre in Dunedin, Levi enjoys life on the farm where there's plenty of room to stretch his legs.
Levi is K9MD's poster boy, and we're pretty sure he knows it.
Magic Lukhan Gold Fly Away Magic
Magic Lukhan Gold Fly Away Magic K9MD dog
Lukhan Gold Fly Away Magic comes from the best Canadian field-line working Golden Retrievers.
Lukhan Gold Kennels. Lukhan Golden Retrievers are well known for their stamina in the field, they have excellent temperament, a strong retrieval drive and agility at work.
Massive thanks to MAGIC CARPETS for their support and sponsorship of this very important dog for our K9 Medical Detection programme.
MAGIC has commenced training to detect Prostate Cancer and is successfully detecting Prostate Cancer in low concentration.
Ace - Pheasant Run Biscuit
K9MD’s canine squad just got bigger, in a small way.
Little Springer Spaniel puppy, ACE, has joined our elite dog team. With all the right credentials we feel sure that ACE will prove to be a winner.
Sue Maunder, from the Milton Opportunities Charitable Trust, was our guest speaker at the last meeting.
The trust has been formed to run the Milton Opp Shop, as well as provide opportunities for the members of the Milton community.
The Milton Opp Shop hopes to open in November – directly across the road from the chemist where they have two shop fronts. One will house the shop, the other will be used for meetings and workshops. All profits from the shop will go back in to the community – groups or individuals can apply for the profits for a month to be used for an activity within the community or where there is a need for funding which can’t be gained elsewhere.
Sue Is a qualified certifier for retail training and the store will be used to provide people with the opportunity to develop their retail skills and gain qualifications.
One of the other initiative they are setting up is the Good Morning Sunshine programme. Elderly people iving alone in the community can register. Trust members and volunteers will drive by their homes at 9.00am each morning. If their curtains are not open emegency contact will be notified. As an add-on, there will be a weekly visit from a trusted contact person, just to ascertain how they are and have a bit of a catch-up.
This will be a great asset for our community. If you have any items to donate to the Op Shop, they can be delivered to the motor cycle shop until the Op Shop opens.
Thank you to Sue and her team for the wonderful work they are doing setting up this great initiative
PS There is a working bee at the shop on Sunday 17 October - if anyone is available to help out with a bit of painting, fixin floors, cleaning etc.
A group of Rotarians will descend on Tautuku Youth Adventure Camp on 16th and 17th of October to complete a range of maintenance tasks. As well as carrying out this community service, this is a great opportunity to mix with fellow Rotarians from three or four other clubs.
Colin is collecting names. Whether you can come for the weekend, or just for a day, please let Colin know.
Concern about the speed that much of the traffic coming into Milton travels, especially near the bridges, has led to Jim Murdoch and Stephen Woodhead investigating having electronic speed signs installed in the town.
President Elect training, for a cluster of the 9980 incoming presidents (will be the new District 9999 by the time they come into office), is to be held in Milton on Saturday 6 November at the Tokomairiro High School. Tanya Lowry has asked our Rotary Club to organise the catering for the event. Glenis has met with Tanya and she is happy for the lunch session to be a BBQ. There will be up to 25 people attending the training.
Please let Glenis know if you are available to help - unfortunately Jackie, Glenis and Suzie are all out of town that weekend.
RYLA is a great opportunity for the young adults in our community - please look out for young leaders you believe will benefit from this.
Unfortunately the young man I thought was going to apply through our club is unable to attend- the timing clashes with some of his key St John’s work. Bronson is keen to attend in the future, but unavailable for 2021. Anyone else know of a suitable candidate?
Applications Open: August 1st and close on December 17th 2021.
We need to encourage local young people (20 – 30 yrs) to apply for this amazing opportunity. Brochures will be available at Rotary meetings.
Please encourage those young people you know to complete an application form.
RYLA 2020 had 28 participants from just 14 Clubs
RYLA 2021 had 35 participants from just 17 Clubs
RYLA 2022 - the goal is 40+ participants and ALL Clubs to sponsor or endorse one or more participants.
