President's Message
Jackie Muir
Hi everyone
It has been another very busy week and good to see those of you who were able to make it to Rotary last week - another lovely meal at Forum and a wee quiz in lieu of our speaker forgetting she was going to Queen!
Steve reported that there will be several trips cancelled due to the recent rains but others are going ahead and they are going well - Stewart Island this Sunday.  Thank you to all you dedicated people organising trips and going along as leaders.

The club needs more members so please bring along anyone that may be interested .
This Monday is a BBQ tea at Colin Calteaux's.  BYO bucket including some food plate, utensils etc.  Also bring along your partners and friends.

Conference is looming please keep the 17/18th April free to help and support our District and go on line and register.  See you on Monday.
Jackie
Stories
Nathan Lewis Guest Speaker
Nathan's Life
Nathan was born in Swansea and lived in Cardiff for a number of years. In 1992 he joined the Territorial "Royal Regiment of Wales" with the motto "Death rather than Dishonour". He served with them until 1998 and in that time travelled the world with the regiment. When Nathan left the Army he worked for a large international supermarket chain called Lidl which worked him for 50 hours per week. Deciding there must be a better life Nathan came to a job in Christchurch working for Big Fresh. Also where he met Amanda ...settled down and now has three boys. (Handsome family)! He then had roles in Woolworths, Countdown, Food town and was Head of meat for Countdown in NZ. Long hours and not much family time, led he and Amanda to Milton where they run the local Supa Value Store.
Nathan gave us all some elementary Welsh lessons which went down well.....we need a bit more practice!! Thank you Nathan for a very interesting address. I am sure there are a few more tales to be told.
Civil Defence Plan
The new Civil Defence Plan for our District is available to view at the Hub. Members are asked to please go and have a look at it and then comment.
Two Minute Slot
Rakeesh spoke about Rotary Know How Day held 19th last. He was very impressed with the excellent speakers presenting topics and he chose the 'membership retention' break out session to attend. His brief summary is as follows.
1. The club needs to me more inclusive and more flexible in recruiting new members. The skills of new members should be recognised when forming committees.
2. Some people want to join Rotary club because they want to help at projects. Some members are not interested in attending meetings and dinners so clubs needs to be more flexible for membership.
3. There is one online rotary club as well and the members do not meet regularly.
4. We need to be more proactive as the numbers are getting low in most clubs and if there are not enough new members then there will be not Rotary. We need to remember that most rotarians are getting close to superannuation. We need to recruit new members to rotary club and retain the membership.
Thanks Rakeesh

Rotary Support for Christchurch
Below is a letter from District 9970 District Governor John Driscoll and the Presidents of the Riccarton, Ferrymead and Linwood/Woolston Rotary Clubs.  Rotary is providing support for the people of Christchurch after the tragedy within the Muslim community.  Please take the time to read this and consider if you are able to support this initiative.
