President's Message
Jackie Muir
Hi everyone
It has been another very busy week and good to see those of you who were able to make it to Rotary last week - another lovely meal at Forum and a wee quiz in lieu of our speaker forgetting she was going to Queen!
Steve reported that there will be several trips cancelled due to the recent rains but others are going ahead and they are going well - Stewart Island this Sunday.  Thank you to all you dedicated people organising trips and going along as leaders.

The club needs more members so please bring along anyone that may be interested .
This Monday is a BBQ tea at Colin Calteaux's.  BYO bucket including some food plate, utensils etc.  Also bring along your partners and friends.

Conference is looming please keep the 17/18th April free to help and support our District and go on line and register.  See you on Monday.
Jackie

CheeseMaker Shares his Knowledge
Our speaker at our last meeting was new Milton resident, Mark Anderson.
Mark has been a cheese maker at the Stirling Cheese Factory for the past 24 years.  It was great to have him along to share his experience with us.  He emphasized the importance of looking after the milk, from the cow’s teat through to the vat at the factory, to make good cheese.  Too much stirring or rough handling breaks up the fat molecules which are important in the cheese making process.  Milk is checked in the farmer’s silo for any unwanted ‘extras’, like penicillin or water.  The milk needs to be kept at 4-5° until it reaches the silos at the cheese factory.  300,000 litres of milk go into the silo to make a batch of cheese.  5000 tonne of cheese is made in a run and 200 tonne is made per day.  1.7 million litres of milk is used per day!  Mark shared the full process of making the cheese with us and also talked about the by-products, such as the curd and whey – nothing is wasted!  He also explained how efficient the plant was and that any waste water came out as pure water, back into the river.
It was a fascinating talk and we thank Mark for sharing his expertise with us.
Two Minute Spot
Glenis shared the success of the Tokomairiro High School PTA Trail Bike Ride Fundraiser which had been held on 8 November.  The team of volunteers from the community did an outstanding job and Glenis expressed thanks to them.  She also gave a special thank you to Steve McLay, for first coming up with this idea 17 years ago, and to Peter Stewart, for the continuing use of the Calder Stewart land and forestry block.  The success of the event also depends on the continuing goodwill of the local farmers who allow the ride to cross their farms – a big thank you to them. The PTA organizing group put in a huge effort and have the whole system running like clockwork.  Almost 900 riders, from Christchurch to Invercargill, Riverton and Wanaka, took part in the event.  Not only do we get to share the wonderful assets of our local community with these riders, we also benefit from their funds coming in to our community.

Conference 2020 Planning Mtg

A meeting is being held at the Rotary Club of Balclutha on Thursday 12 December - we need members of the Milton Rotary Club to help out.
Please let Jackie know if you are available - the more we have the easier it will be for everyone.  There are a number of projects to be completed by the Rotary representatives in our local community - let's get behind this great initiative.
There is more information below.
District Conference 2020
District Conference 2020 is a conference with a difference and our South Otago communities are are going to benefit!

In keeping with the ‘people of action’ catch cry and the year’s theme ‘Rotary connects the World’ It is timely to introduce a project day. By making use of the people resource of attendees, coupled with an agreed funding amount we will be able to benefit our community agencies and organisations and raise the profile of Rotary.

The organising committee is keen to make this a grass roots style conference that is family friendly and very affordable. Rotarians are encouraged to bring children, including grown up ones, and grandchildren along to show how they are making a difference.

Rotarians from all around District 9980 will be involved in carrying out projects in our communities.  Both Milton Rotary and Balclutha Rotary have put forward funding to support projects ranging from painting at a child care centre, planting trees, digging gardens and making curtains, to name a few.

Lots of person-power is required to help make this a success.  The cost of the conference is being kept to a minimum and a programme is also being developed for children under 15.

What is needed now is for Rotarians to register - lots of hands are needed for this to be a success, and our town is definitely going to benefit.  Here's the link to the online registration - https://www.rotary9980conference.org/pre-register-now

Let's get a great representation from the Rotary Club of Milton!  Register online now!
