President's Message
Jackie Muir
Hello Everyone
Week 2 of lockdown - I hope you are all well and finding plenty to occupy your time, I know a lot of you are working from home which will have challenges but hopefully not too frustrating. For me personally I am not working due to having to travel to get to work but having no trouble filling in my days and getting a lot done inside and out at home.
Rotary of course is on hold but support for the community continues where we can. We have a roster at this stage Tuesday Thursday and Saturday assisting Nathan at Supervalue, counting people coming to and from the supermarket, for which he is very grateful. If anyone is able and interested in assisting, please give me a call. No pressure.
I have also been contacted by the Cancer Society who have enlisted support from all clubs to assist people at home with cancer to obtain essentials and they will let me know if there is anyone in need.
I am thinking of you all in what has become the new normal and sending best wishes to you all.
Take Care out there
Jackie

Stories
Two Minute Spot
Stephen Woodhead shared a fascinating story about the large ships that now come through Port Chalmers every week before heading off loaded with export goods from New Zealand, bound for Malaysia.  Fourteen days after leaving Port Chalmers the ship arrives in Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia.  The round trip is 42 days and visits Tauranga, Napier, Lyttleton, and Port Chalmers in New Zealand.
The Otago Regional Council has been involved in an issue that has arisen with a deep thumping noise causing issues in suburbs around the harbour while the large Rio Class ships are in port.
The Rio Class ships are 286 meters long and 40 meters wide.  When fully loaded they have a capacity of 5903 containers.  The ships use 80 tonnes of fuel (diesel) per day, steaming at 23 knots.
It was a fascinating story from Stephen, supported by some excellent photographs.

Rotary Support for Christchurch
Below is a letter from District 9970 District Governor John Driscoll and the Presidents of the Riccarton, Ferrymead and Linwood/Woolston Rotary Clubs.  Rotary is providing support for the people of Christchurch after the tragedy within the Muslim community.  Please take the time to read this and consider if you are able to support this initiative.
