President's Message
Jackie Muir
Hello Everyone
Week 2 of lockdown - I hope you are all well and finding plenty to occupy your time, I know a lot of you are working from home which will have challenges but hopefully not too frustrating. For me personally I am not working due to having to travel to get to work but having no trouble filling in my days and getting a lot done inside and out at home.
Rotary of course is on hold but support for the community continues where we can. We have a roster at this stage Tuesday Thursday and Saturday assisting Nathan at Supervalue, counting people coming to and from the supermarket, for which he is very grateful. If anyone is able and interested in assisting, please give me a call. No pressure.
I have also been contacted by the Cancer Society who have enlisted support from all clubs to assist people at home with cancer to obtain essentials and they will let me know if there is anyone in need.
I am thinking of you all in what has become the new normal and sending best wishes to you all.
Take Care out there
Jackie

Guest Speaker
Due to last minute speaker cancellation we had an impromtu club assembly which everyone actually enjoyed!  In summary
  • New members sometimes feel a little bewildered and unsure and would like to see a more comprehensive introduction package to our club eg a resume of club projects past and present. What we do and stand for in the community.  More hands on projects.
  • The community at large doesnt really know what we do and stand for.  Suggested we should have more articles in local news about the many grants we allocate, projects we  work on, PHF awards and what it actually means.
  • A request from Jim that we investigate with the appropriate authorities the possibility of extra warning light system for our pedestrian crossings.  He (and others) have witnessed a number of near miss car v pedestrian incidents.
To address the above I would like to
  1. introduce a time slot in the meeting agenda perhaps labelled 'projects past and present' allocated to various senior members
  2. ask for a club member to take on a pr role and put regular articles in the genesis
  3. ask Secretary Kerry to write to CDC (or NZTA) re crossings and early warning lights.
Thanks to everyone for your contribution.
Two Minute Slot
Rakeesh spoke about Rotary Know How Day held 19th last. He was very impressed with the excellent speakers presenting topics and he chose the 'membership retention' break out session to attend. His brief summary is as follows.
1. The club needs to me more inclusive and more flexible in recruiting new members. The skills of new members should be recognised when forming committees.
2. Some people want to join Rotary club because they want to help at projects. Some members are not interested in attending meetings and dinners so clubs needs to be more flexible for membership.
3. There is one online rotary club as well and the members do not meet regularly.
4. We need to be more proactive as the numbers are getting low in most clubs and if there are not enough new members then there will be not Rotary. We need to remember that most rotarians are getting close to superannuation. We need to recruit new members to rotary club and retain the membership.
Thanks Rakeesh
