Stories
Two-Minute Talk
At our last Rotary meeting, Glen Johnston gave a very interesting talk about the technology now used on their dairy farm.  The aghub computer system measures soil moisture in real time and also utilises a safety cutoff on the irrigator.  There is real-time mapping of nutrients going onto pasture and they have just purchased a new type of irrigator that allows the spread effluent at a much lower rate.  Technology is now an integral part of their farming business.

Teen Ag National Champs 2018
The speakers at our last meeting were three of the finalist from the Teen Ag Nationals held in conjunction with the New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year competition held in Invercargill early July.  The Tokomairiro High school Teen Ag Club has only been going for two and a half years and both years they have had a team in the finals.  This year there were two Teen Ag teams and one Agri-kids team in the national finals – a great effort.
Rebecca, Laura and James expressed their thanks to local businesses, Lions and Rotary for the support in their fundraising efforts.

An exciting thing to note is that next year the Regional Finals are going to be held in Milton!

Daffodil Day
Daffodil Day – a special thank you to Peter Mallon for leading this for our club.  Although it was a very cool day, almost $5000 was raised in Milton.
Rotary Sign
Rotary sign at the south end of the Milton – thank you to Ross Pringle who has organised the repainting of the Rotary sign.  It was looking very ‘tired’ but is now all spruced up.  Thank you, Ross.
Targa Rally
Steve McLay reported that the Targa Rally is planned for late October and we have been asked to provide 19 people for the day of Wednesday 24 October.
Please make contact with Steve if you are able to help for the day.

Stroke Foundation Blood Pressure Campaign
The annual Stroke Foundation Blood Pressure Campaign is scheduled for Saturday 6th October – 10am – 2pm
This campaign is run in conjunction with New World, Pac’n’Sav and 4 Square supermarkets.
We are looking for a club member to organise this in Milton.  Please let John Taal know if you can do that or are available to help out on the day.
WHAT CAUSES HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE? For most people there is no specific cause for high blood pressure. Blood pressure tends to rise as we get older. Men are more likely to have high blood pressure than women. High blood pressure can also run in families. Factors which can increase your risk of high blood pressure include: being overweight; smoking; drinking too much alcohol; not exercising; eating an unhealthy diet; eating too much salt; diabetes.
Shelter Boxes
Shelter Boxes – Rakesh and Stephen  presented a video about Shelter Boxes and their value . Our club usually donates 2 boxes per year. The cost is $1500 each and thus far over 100,00 boxes have been used in emergencies. The latest need is in the Phillipines.

Rotary Global Scholars
Our Rotary district currently has two Rotary Global Scholars studying peace and conflict studies at the University of Otago.
Below is posting by Claire Ramsay in the district newsletter
This year District 9980 is privileged to have two Rotary Global Scholars with us.  Gretchen Druliner and Remaya Campbell (pictured) both arrived to start second semester study at the University of Otago.  And both are enrolled in the Masters of Peace and Conflict Studies (note this does not make them Peace Scholars – those scholarships are only available for students studying at Rotary Peace Centres of which there are six around the world.  The Otago Centre is not a Rotary Centre; but it has an excellent reputation).

Rotary Modernisation
Posted by Bruce Cowan in the District newsletter
Things have changed exponentially since the first Rotary Club meeting was held in Wellington in June 1921, but our organisational structure, and the way we do Rotary here, hasn’t necessarily kept pace with that change.  Rotary International has also challenged us to address declining membership numbers and we know cost and culture barriers exist for young people in joining Rotary.
In response, a working group, supported by RI and comprising representatives of the District Governor group from each of our six Districts, has been exploring a variety of strategy and structure options.  It is an exciting opportunity for us to be innovative and bold – and we think we will need to be both if we want to progress Rotary in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands into a second century of service.

The working group will present the background and findings to date, to the New Zealand Governors, Governors-Elect (GE), and Governors-Nominee (GN) at the Australia New Zealand Rotary Conference in Hobart next month for initial consideration and discussion, following which a consultation process with members will commence.
Parting Thought
Steve McLay shared the following parting thought at our last meeting:
Success in life consists not of holding good cards but playing the cards you have well.
