Lois offered our invocation surrounded by our other normal formalities; Dean Monke was our greeter. President Zack announced that Anthony's family has grown with the birth of a baby girl on September 5th. This writer led off the bragging and fining, contributing for not having published the Rounds for our meeting on the 6th, noting he was in the process of proofreading what he had prepared and pushed the wrong button and lost his material -- really! Lisa contributed for missing a meeting, as did Ryan, but he also needed to thank Brian who covered for him as greeter the day Ryan missed the meeting. Jamie also paid for missing a couple times, indicating one absence was due to his wife having surgery. Steve L. was happy that he was getting his internet re-hooked up at home after an extended disconnect due to circumstances beyond his control. Deb shared her excitement of having attended the in-bound youth exchange retreat at the Finnish Concordia Language Camp, with six Rotary exchange students in our District this year. Keith shared the good news of an eighth grandchild on the way. Dean finished things off by letting us know the prior Sunday his middle daughter Anna was ordained and will be the minister at Zion Lutheran near Pelican Rapids. President Zack introduced his brother, Kristopher, who talked about his business, Elevate, located at 214 W. Lincoln Ave. Kris was born and raised in Fergus Falls, has four children ages 2½ to 20 and his background is as a registered nurse (he was the first male nurse to work at Sanford on the labor and delivery floor). He originally opened Elevate in November 2022 as an e-commerce cannabis retailer, with a grand opening for local customers this past March 17. Kris told us his wife became disabled after their last child was born and that THC has really helped to moderate her symptoms. We were given a comprehensive presentation on cannabinoids. Kris talked about the endocannabinoid.system, which was only discovered in the late 1980's but which we now know is present in every mammal. There are CB1 receptors, found in the brain and which affect emotions, and CB2 receptors that are found throughout the body and are good for homeostasis. THC only affects the CB1 receptors. Hemp and cannabis are the same plant, with the only difference being in the THC content -- hemp has less that a .3% THC content while cannabis is anything over that. Thus, the primary difference is in potency, Kris stating, however, that hemp is more impactful on the CB2 receptors. Through genetic alterations, cannabis plants have been made more potent, going up from the 10-15% range 10 to 15 years ago to now 20% and up. Delta-9 is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis that causes a person to feel high. It is the most abundant cannabinoid (there are over 120, with more being developed) in cannabis. A person who has digested a gummy with THC won't feel the effects for one to two hours, but the THC can stay in your system from four to 40 days. A blood test is required to determine THC levels. In other states that have legalized cannabis, the DUI rate has only gone up by two to four percent but if one is also using alcohol, the DUI rate has increased by 40%. CBD is a cannabinoid that a lot of people take on a daily basis to have a positive impact on their overall health, although one will not notice any effects from it; nonetheless, it can cause one to fail a drug test. CBN is another cannabinoid which is great for people who have trouble sleeping. CBG was the first cannabinoid ever found and is a very helpful anti-inflammatory aid and an alternative to ibuprofen, with CBG processed through the liver instead of the kidneys. Kris recommends CBG for everyone and also said cannabinoids taken together work better. There are 1000 different strains of cannabis and we were told the following are myths about its use: 1) you can overdose; 2) it can cause mental illness; 3) it has no medical use; 4) it will cause physical addiction; 5) its use will cause memory loss; and 6) its use will lower one's IQ. It is true, however, that you can build tolerance to it and that it will make you hungrier. To learn more, you can visit elevateff.com. |
