Kathy checked us in & everyone enjoyed meat loaf, mashed potatoes & corn while visiting with the M State basketball players and Hillcrest students who were dispersed among our tables.
President Zach called the meeting to order & led us in the Pledge and the Four Way Test. The invocation was offered by John MacFarlane (it started out so very serious and heavy as he prayed for nations at war and for our divided political nation, and then ended with everyone laughing out loud as he prayed for Bison football fans).
Keith Olson introduced our student guests from Hillcrest and each of them were presented a Four Way Test coin by President Zach:
- Owen, from CT, dorm student, Student Body President, cross country runner;
- Bailey, moved here from KS when she was seven, volleyball player, Secretary of the Student Body;
- Max, from Bismarck, ND – plays soccer, music worship leader at Hillcrest and area churches; and
- Elle, from PA, involved in arts & music at Hillcrest, Youth Group leader for junior high and is Class President.

Dave Cresap – paid a brag for having the honor of coaching the young men of M State Basketball
Program:
Kathy Austvold introduced Dave Cresap, the new head coach for men’s basketball at M State. Previously he had been coaching for almost 30 years in Perham, MN. Dave talked about the 2020 section championship when Perham was set to play the Otters, both with fantastic records, but sections were canceled due to the pandemic.
Dave retired last spring after 37 years of teaching sixth grade . He played for Dave Retzlaff at M State from 1978 to 1980. So when Retzlaff’s asked him to interview for the Spartan head coaching job, he took the invitation seriously. His commitment to recruiting locally, recruiting men of character, and shaping young men to be good people are why he thinks he was chosen for the job. He considers it a privilege and said that in his 38 years of coaching, the young men he is working with at M State this year are truly willing and respectful both on and off the court.
Coach Cresap asks 3 things of his players:
1. Good attitude;
2. Good effort; and
3. Control your actions (be respectful) both on and off the court.
He believes basketball is a very small part of their life and that his job is not about winning/losing games, but about developing high-character, respectful people. He said these kids are now part of his family for the rest of their lives as they build relationships and mutual trust. Of the 16 players on the roster this year, these young men were present:
Skelly –from Minneapolis;
Eric – from Augusta, GA;
Kam – from Fargo, ND;
Mason – from Seattle, WA;
Zunekia - from Fargo South; and
Matt – from West Fargo;
The coach closed by sharing he feels it is important to connect players with the community and they were grateful for the opportunity to be here today. He asked us to come out and support the players during their season and handed out some season schedules. Every player shook every Rotarian’s hand before they left. Classy!
