This author checked folks in at the front desk and did double duty as greeter. President Dan called the meeting to order and after anthems, invocation was provided by John MacFarlane and Keith led us in singing #62 “Round Her Neck She Wears a Yellow Ribbon”, #34 "Edelweiss", and #3 Smile. Welcome & Announcements- We welcomed guests Ken Hardy (proposed member) and Bob Wasson from the FF Sunrise Club. Katie Knutson and Maleah Hull were also introduced as program presenters.
- Thank you notes were passed around form Shop Move & Groove for participation and Otter Cove for the donation.
- Peach Sale Reminders: Send your preliminary numbers with Keith or Jamie to help us track sales. Expected arrival is still next Thursday the 15th. If you can help at the truck behind Olson’s when they arrive it would be greatly appreciated!
- Meeting Reminders: Our August 21st meeting will be a potluck picnic at Broadway Park Rotary Shelter. Watch your email for the invitation.
- Dan reported that Keith did a nice job singing at Rod Ebersviller's funeral on Monday. He thanked Rotarians who attended to pay tribute to this fellow Rotarian and incredible man.
Board Meeting ReportThe board met prior to this meeting. Dan reported a decision was made to separate the 100 Year Centennial Committee into 3 groups. The Project, The Event and This History. Let Dan know if you’re interested in leading any of these groups. We have lots to do in a short timeframe. He also said the Board accepted Ken Hardy’s proposed membership application to the club and that they also regretfully accepted Ben Durbin’s resignation from the club. New Member ProposalPer the Board's action noted above, Ken Hardy has been proposed for membership by Buzz Lundeen with the classification of Newspaper Publishing. If no objection to his membership is received by a Board member within seven days, he will be invited to become a member of our club. Upcoming Service OpportunitiesAnthony reported that Ditch Clean Up will be in late September/early October. Salvation Army kids will be assisting and we’d like at least 2-3 Rotarians to help as well. It will be a later afternoon timeframe, possibly around 4pm. He also said that Stan Carignan is looking for volunteers to help with Habitat for Humanity House in Battle Lake. He will send out an email to all members about these opportunities following the meeting. Brags & Fines- Dan: Bragged about his son’s 5th birthday today, his mother-in-law’s birthday celebrated at the lake last week, and about attending Twins game last Sunday with the tickets he won at the Rotary.
- Hal - Thanked Keith for his beautiful singing at Rod's funeral, noting he knows how hard it is to sing for family or dear friend.
- Buzz - Thanked Ken for publishing the promo for the peaches and bragged for Rod, joking he could hear him saying “Use the Mike” at his funeral.
- Randy - bragged about our fundraising and reporting that the running tally for past six years is over $120,000! He said this speaks volumes about what we do in giving back in service to our community. He encouraged us to keep this in mind as we finish up peaches and prepare for Roses. He also threw in a pitch for his son Henry who was one of the kids selling lemonade for the United Way in the YMCA lobby today and invited us all to stop by and drink up on our way out.
- Bob Wasson threw in for the fact that 50 years ago today he was on the mission to return the Apollo 11 astronauts home after they were released from quarantine. He remembers President Nixon coming out to welcome the astronauts home.
- Keith - contributed and reminisced about his dad and Rod’s hunting escapades through the years. He said Rod was the last of the original Buck Snort hunters and that his brother Guy is now the old man of the group in the next generation at hunting camp.
- Mike Smith - said they watched as the old McDonald’s building was completely demolished in a short 2 hours this morning and they'll be watching as the new building goes up.
Today's Program As Advisor for the Interact in Battle Lake club, Bob Wasson introduced the program. He explained that our club and his Sunrise club jointly sponsor students to go to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership in Action) Camp each summer. Maleah Hull is the third girl in her family to attend and she was on hand to share her experiences with us today. Isaac Hallberg also went, but was unable to attend to present today due to his work schedule. Bob also introduced Katie Knutson who attended as a camper three years ago and has gone on to serve as a facilitator the past two years at RYLA. Katie is now starting her junior year at UMD as a pre-med major and she is President at the joint UMD/St. Scholastica/Superior colleges Rotaract club. Maleah shared her experiences at Camp as a member of family C. (There were families A through P). She said she grew to love her new friends & roommates and the Service Projects was her favorite part of camp. Other highlights she shared with us through pictures and her stories were: - Learning the FISH! Philosophy from the Seattle Pike’s Place Fish Market: “Be There. Play. Make Their Day. Choose Your Attitude.”

Maleah said RYLA taught her a lot about herself and how to be a good person. She believes being a good person is essential to being a good leader and being able to work with others and use everyone’s different perspectives to make the world better. The program closed with some Q&A, mostly centered around how we can all work to recruit more kids to attend RYLA.
