Our in-person meeting at Broadway Park on July 8th saw 19 Rotarians gather, with Erika Lahti our guest and the program brought by Tim King from Service Food.  The meeting was preceded by a Board meeting at which it was announced that Mike Westergard had resigned from the club.  We recited the Pledge, recited the Four Way Test and Keith Olson gave the invocation. President Anthony reminded us of the need for volunteers at the following day’s Lucky Duck Derby – and fishing nets.  (I still think those of you who have duck calls should break them out for the event too, but it appears most of you believe that is an idea most fowl.)  There was also a Rotary Minute quiz involving duck trivia and those assembled answered two of four correctly.  President Anthony started off the bragging by noting his daughter's third birthday that day.  Dan Johnson followed up by reporting their youngest turned two the previous Monday.  Ryan Welle paid for missing some meetings, noting it has been crazy at his place of business during the pandemic.  Keith Olson thanked Brian Tjaden for coming to his aid with a necessary piece of equipment.  Hal Leland was happy everyone could make it to the meeting and Ken Harty put in for missing one.  Kevin King then talked about how he came to work at Service Food and what is going on there.  Kevin's parents operated a dairy farm in the Lakeville-Farmington area; he has been in the Fergus Falls area since the early 1990's, saying he "married into the grocery business."  Service Food was started by George and Lora Spies in 1938 and Gary became involved starting in 1954.  The store moved to its current location in 1978 and they added on to the building in 1987.  Kevin became Vice President of operations ten years ago.  Kevin then talked about how things have been affected by the pandemic, noting that on March 19th the store's inventory was basically wiped out and then for about 12 days they were getting two trucks a day with deliveries instead of one.  There are less people working at the store now but they are putting in more hours.  Before the pandemic the average day's order was 1200 items, that is now down to about 700.   Campbell Soups has told its vendors that it will take about a year for it to catch up.  While at one point the thought was that the grocery industry was getting away from home deliveries, that has turned around.  During the initial stages of the pandemic Service Food was averaging 80 to 100 call-in/drive-up orders a day; now that is down to about 35.  Assistance from the Chamber allowed the store to deal with the demand.  Kevin sees things moving to on-line ordering and they are now restarting an effort to provide that service to their customers.  Kevin noted that Gary is very generous and John MacFarlane added that Gary Spies has made a huge difference in this community, something we should all recognize.
