Rotary Meetings
January 25, 2023, at Rotary
We met in the gymnasium at the Salvation Army and our invocation was offered by this writer. President Ken welcomed Assistant District Governor Blake Crosby and then our student guests from Hillcrest introduced themselves.  From left to right below:  Hope Adams who plays volleyball, Angie Bui from Vietnam, Erik Bjorndahl who plays football, basketball and golf, and Jiun Moon who plays basketball and socker and participates in track.
Brian Tjaden gave a service update in Zack Stach's absence and then Blake Carlson told us about some District assistance being offered to clubs bringing in new members as well as upcoming events for Rotarians.  Blake has moved from Bismarck to the Fargo-Moorhead area and is now a member of the morning club in Fargo.  There was a Rotary Minute Quiz based on previously unshared information from the January Rotary magazine, with one of three questions answered correctly (since the war started in Ukraine, over 14 million people have been forced to flee; The Rotary Foundation has given over $11.7 million dollars in disaster grants for Ukraine through late October of last year; and with $300,000 from Rotary and a matching gift from a U.S. based non-profit, 40 ambulances were donated and driven in a caravan to Kyiv).

When we moved on to brags and fines, Tim Hunt let us know he might be absent in the near future as Desta is scheduled to have knee surgery this week.  Keith Olson told us he will not be personally present for up to six weeks as he and Kim travel to Arizona; he also referenced the Rotary Club in Billings, Montana donating $100,000 to a Salvation Army building project there.  Mark Bring contributed for missing the last three meetings and Anthony Nordan apologized for having to meet in the gym (it wasn't too bad).  John MacFarland talked about Eunice's funeral service the prior Friday that a lot of Rotarians attended, which he much appreciated.  He also said he received a call from someone at college in Moorhead where they are conducting a survey of the values people hold and John referenced The Four Way Test.

We then adjourned the meeting to head out to Fergus Falls Monument Co. where Rotarian Ryan Welle gave those in attendance a tour.  The business was founded in 1883 and was sold six times before the Welle family purchased it in the 1940's.  Its original location was 219 E. Lincoln Ave., moving to its present location in 1977.  The business in now operated by brothers Ryan and Michael.

Rotarians Filling Bags at the United Way
On January 30, 2023, Rotarians Ken Harty, Zack Stach, Dave Johnson, Dean Monke, Katie Johnson and Steve Andrews filled bags for the Feeding Backpack Program at the United Way office here in Fergus Falls.
Trustees Establish Targeted Funds to Aid Ukraine and Pakistan

The Rotary Foundation Trustees established two temporary funds this month to assist Pakistan and Ukraine, two areas that are facing extreme need.

The Pakistan Flood Response Fund and the Ukraine Response Fund address the humanitarian crises caused by devastating flooding in Pakistan and the war in Ukraine. Donors can give directly to relief efforts led by Rotary members.

Contributions will be accepted until 31 December 2023. Districts can apply for grants from the funds until 30 June 2024 or until the funds have all been allocated. Any contributions that haven't been spent by 30 June 2024 will be transferred to the general Disaster Response Fund, to be made available for disasters worldwide.

How to contribute

You can give online or by check:

  • To contribute online, use my.rotary.org/donate.
  • To give by check, make it payable to The Rotary Foundation or to an associate foundation and include a completed contribution form. In the DESIGNATION/PURPOSE section, choose Other and write the fund name (Pakistan Flood Response Fund or Ukraine Response Fund).
New Member Incentive Offered by our Rotary District
Membership growth is a priority for Rotary International and District 5580. New members bring vitality, new ideas, and new energy to our Clubs. District 5580 wants to encourage membership growth this year by providing an incentive to new members for joining. The incentive is the elimination of the annual $66 District dues in the new member's first year.

The process involves sending District Treasurer Elaine Hansen ehansen906@gmail.com notice that a new member has joined your Club (include either the new member's membership # or approved application) and she will write a check and send it to your Club. In the new member  recruiting process you should explain that the $66 District dues reduction is a first year incentive to new members.
