While attendance has been better since we were forced to hold virtual meetings, today was an exception, with only 15 noon Rotarians participating. Mary Pettit offered our invocation, after which President Dan reminded us to pick up and sell Lucky Duck Derby raffle tickets. One ticket only cots $5.00 and makes one eligible for the first place price of $500, the second place prize of $250, and the third place prize of $100. The event will be held on July 9 with the ducks set to float down the river starting at 5:00 p.m. We were also reminded of the Rotary picnic next Wednesday at noon; you are to bring your own lawn chair so we can maintain social distancing. Ken Harty was the first of only two who wanted to do a little bragging, noting that The Daily Journal had moved into its new location at the Carnegie Library last week and opened for business this past Monday; an open house will be held once they get settled in. Dan Johnson then said that he and his wife celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary this past Monday and thanks to in-laws Keith and Kim taking care of the children he and wife were able to enjoy a dinner at Spanky's. Keith Olson then introduced Kim Embretson, a member of Sunrise Rotary, who was first asked about the beautiful background from his lake place on the Canadian side of Rainy Lake. He then talked about the Sunrise Club taking over the running of the Food Shelf after its Board made a decision to close and the City stepped in and ran it initially. That resulted in a change in how food is distributed, so people can no longer request specific items but are given a supply of groceries. Now pick-up is on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons and volunteer staff is usually limited to four in number so social distancing can be maintained. There is also no longer a limit on a family receiving groceries once a month. Since March, over 1200 families have been served, although some of these may be repeats. When the City took over it set a goal of raising $40,000 and it actually received $60,000; someone dropped off $1,000 just last week. Kim showed us the software program they are now using to track volunteers and if you want to be one, go to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040. That should be the sign-up for Food Shelf Volunteers. To volunteer a person should be able to lift between 20 to 40 pounds. Then Kim went on to talk about the efforts of Sunrise to support healthcare workers by buying and donating snacks from local vendors and delivering them to Lake Region Healthcare, where Tom Rufer distributes them to different units in the hospital. This was an idea Karen Terry brought forward and the club decided to sponsor. Randy Kempfer, as Treasurer of the Fergus Falls Rotary Foundation, set up a PayPal site for it to accept donations to this cause.
