PROGRAM: Katie Johnson had the opportunity to introduce our program. It was presented by Mrs. Maureen Anderson, who is a civil engineering graduate turned miserable cubicle dweller turned ridiculously happy and healthy host of the nationally syndicated radio talk show, “Doing What Works,” which originates from AM 1100 The Flag in Fargo and airs on the station at 11:00 on Sunday mornings. Maureen is the author of five books. Her first, Staying The Course, was written with Dick Beardsley -- a marathon runner and farm accident survivor who lived in Detroit Lakesfor several years. Her second book, Left for Dead, was written with Hon Hovde of Fertile, Minnesota, and won a Minnesota Book Award. And her latest, The Willpower Workaround, is about one way to break an addiction to junk food.
Obesity kills one in five Americans these days, and guess what, diets don’t work! The real idea here is to just eat right each and every day. About 75% of packaged foods have added sugar and sugar is addictive. Some people can handle these amounts of sugar and some people take one bite and it’s over. The whole idea of free days does not work either, because for some people they just reinforces these lifelong addictions. The best pathway to eliminating this extra sugar from your diet is to just try to get through a few days and then a few weeks and finally a few months. Other positives that one can see from a healthy diet include sleeping better, healthy looking skin, more energy, and really just being happier in general.
Research has shown that over 80% of work absenteeism could be prevented by just making healthier choices. Of course the best thing to drink is plain old water - well maybe plain fresh water. Some snacks that are very much approved would be dark chocolate, blueberries, and dates with coconut. Some people can manage to have a treat once in a while and some people just need to cut out those bad food choices altogether. Some of this is just getting to know yourself and what can you handle in your diet plan. This is not just about waist size, but a general healthy lifestyle in general. Maureen had some very basic common sense things to share with us in this program, and all very good information that all of us can be reminded about in how we have the ability to manage our own health and well being.
Great Program – Great Information – Great Chance to Make a Change or Two. Thanks Maureen!
Yours in Rotary,
