This fund was set up in 1938 and continues to this day to help at risk children have the ability to access education due to being able to access funds for school uniforms.
The terms of the trust deed state that the funds are to be used to assist in the betterment, education, advancement and physical welfare of the youth in the community, particularly in cases where bereavement, sickness or family disturbances leave the children in need of assistance if they are to continue their studies.

The fund is New Zealand wide and is administered by Rotary Clubs in each Rotary District, making small grants to individuals/families for children’s school uniforms for families where there is difficulty in meeting these basic costs. The Rotary Club of Wellington manages administration for District 9940 which covers the lower North Island. The committee consists of three Club members who assess each application based on need.
In Wellington where there is some pressure on this fund, grants are limited to school uniforms and to a maximum of: $150 for primary students, $200 for intermediate, $250 for high school students and $400 per family per year.

The committee looks to pay out 100% of funds received in the year of receipt. Applications must be received via a Rotary Club or a support organisation such as the child's school, church, BirthrightBarnardosWellington City Mission etc. In recent years we have continued to work closely with secondary schools and now bulk fund a number so that those who operate at the front line can prioritize the need for uniform in their local area.  Applicants from bulk funded schools should approach the school administration for access to assistance rather than applying to the committee. Schools receiving bulk funding include: Bishop Viard College, Horowhenua College, Makoura College, Mana College, Manawatu College, Naenae College, Paraparaumu College, Patea Area School, Porirua College, Rangitikei College, Taita College, Wanganui City College and Wanganui Girls College.

Contact information for areas outside Rotary District 9940 can be found on the J R McKenzie Youth Education Fund website.
