News From The Board

Meal Update for Our Meetings

It’s now a year since we moved to our current venue, and while the arrangement has worked well overall, meal delivery has at times been a little challenging. To make things easier and more enjoyable, we’re aiming to make things simpler.

At our next meeting, the meal will be salad (with protein) and bread instead of sandwiches/savories and a sweet. If this approach proves popular, we plan to continue to have salads in the summer and offer a generous bowl of soup and bread in winter. The new options will be dietary‑friendly, ensuring there’s something suitable for everyone.

A reminder that the $35 meeting cost covers much more than the meal itself. It also includes tea and coffee, venue and projection expenses, the guest speaker’s and President's meal, and the subsidy that allows prospective members to attend their first two meetings at no charge. These shared costs help us maintain the welcoming, well‑run meetings we all value.

Some Fascinating Speakers at the Rotary Oceania Summit

March 20-22 in Napier

Join President Lynn and others for the usual lovely Hawkes Bay attractions, plus involvement in some local projects, but the speakers are a great part of the event. They include:
  • Adele Keefe - Founder of Mana Whanui, a trust that supports people recovering from trauma, abuse & addiction
  • Ritesh Patel - District Technology & Systems Chair. He talks on topics such as leveraging AI for Rotary success
  • Karim Rostami - Polio survivor, Afghan refugee, marathon swimmer and cafe owner!

Our Slide Team: Volunteers Behind the Scenes!

A quick reminder — our slide team are volunteers, doing their best to keep meetings running smoothly!

If you’re using slides:

  • Keep them simple — fancy effects or videos often cause hiccups.

  • Send them to Julie by Sunday or Lee by 10am Monday, so there’s time to load and check everything.

  • Fewer slides are better — let your words take centre stage!

Rotary & Te Araroa Trail Walkers in Wellington

Members may notice Te Araroa walkers passing through Wellington now. Over 2,000 tackle the full trail annually, with numbers projected to hit 10,000 by 2030.

Rotary played a key, but lesser-known role in its development. Founder Geoff Chapple consulted many Rotary Clubs and Districts, despite the ambitious vision seeming distant. Members who were keen trampers checked and advised on local routes. Denis McLean and Tricia Walbridge were members at our Club who contributed. Our very own Kerry Prendergast walked it and lived to tell the tale!
